If you see emojis showing as squares, missing emojis in Google Messages, or a box instead of an emoji, the most likely cause is that your phone or the app cannot render that emoji or emoji sequence. First check whether the same emoji appears correctly in another messaging app: that can help distinguish a device-wide support issue from one limited to Google Messages.
What a square or missing emoji usually means
A small square in place of an emoji is often called a “tofu” glyph. It usually indicates that the app’s rendering system does not support the character or sequence, rather than proving the sender sent a blank message. Android Developers explains that unsupported newer emoji may show as a square or render incorrectly: Android’s emoji compatibility guidance.
Emoji are characters displayed using fonts, and their appearance can vary between platforms. Some are made from multiple code points, so a sequence may fail to display even if its individual symbols work. Google’s explainer describes this font-based behavior: How emoji get their look on Android.
A square by itself does not show that a text failed to send or arrive. If the message itself is missing, treat that separately as a delivery problem; Google’s messaging troubleshooting covers connectivity, carrier, account, and configuration issues: Fix problems sending, receiving, or connecting to Google Messages.

Check whether the issue is Google Messages or the phone
- Open the same message or emoji in another text-capable app, if you can. If the square appears there too, the problem is more likely related to device-level emoji support. If it appears only in Google Messages, the app’s rendering path is a more likely place to investigate.
- Use the same emoji or sequence for the comparison. A multi-character emoji sequence may be unsupported even when its component symbols display correctly.
This is a practical diagnostic comparison based on how apps render emoji, not an official Google emoji-specific test.
Update Android and Google Messages
- Check your phone’s Settings for an available Android or system update. The exact menu labels vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Open Google Play, find Google Messages, and install an available update.
- Restart the phone, then check the same emoji again.
Google recommends using the latest version of Messages as a general troubleshooting step. Its guidance does not identify updating as a guaranteed fix for square emojis specifically.

Why Android version can matter
Android 11 (API level 30) and earlier cannot update the emoji font at the operating-system level. On those versions, support for newer emoji may depend on whether an app provides compatible emoji handling. Android Developers describes EmojiCompat/emoji2 and AppCompat as developer tools for backward compatibility; they are not consumer settings and do not guarantee that a particular Google Messages display issue will be resolved.
Google noted in an April 8, 2022 explainer that emoji had historically depended on operating-system updates, while also describing app-based compatibility approaches. The practical implication is that an Android update can help, but it is not certain to fix every unsupported emoji or sequence.

If the square appears only in Google Messages
If Google Messages is current, the emoji displays in another app, and restarting did not help, contact Google Messages or your device maker’s support. Include the exact emoji or sequence, your Android version, phone model, and Google Messages version so support can identify the affected rendering case.
Google’s general troubleshooting instructions do not document clearing Messages data, changing the phone’s font, or factory-resetting the device as fixes for missing emoji. Avoid treating those steps as established remedies for this symptom.

Do not confuse missing glyphs with animation or reaction settings
Google Messages has a “Show expressive animations” setting and an option to show iPhone reactions as emoji. Those settings change animation or reaction presentation; they do not provide missing-font support for a square glyph.

Google reported in 2022 that 96% of Android users could not see emoji released in the year they debuted, attributing that historical figure to Emojipedia. It is not a current estimate of Android users affected today. Google’s page also noted that Gmail received its first emoji update since 2016 in 2021; that is historical context, not evidence about present Google Messages compatibility.

The available official guidance does not publish a Google Messages-specific square-emoji fix or a current comparable statistic for how many Android users see unsupported emoji. The best-supported approach is to identify whether the display issue is app-specific or device-wide, install available updates, and report persistent app-specific cases with device and version details.
