Choose based on your format, location, eligibility, audience habits, and whether you want to build beyond short videos—not on promises of higher reach or earnings.

TikTok’s official Creator Rewards Program announcement describes rewards for high-quality, original videos longer than one minute. It gives these account-level criteria: the creator must be at least 18, have at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 views during the last 30 days, use a personal account in good standing, and live in a region where the program is available. The announcement does not settle the complete current country list, so check eligibility in TikTok’s in-app Creator tools.
What TikTok says affects rewards
TikTok names four core factors: originality, play duration, search value, and audience engagement. It describes play duration in terms of watch time and finish rate, and engagement in terms of likes, comments, and shares. The announcement also says account ad value is automatically rewarded, based on the community’s ad watch time; it does not publish a fixed payment per view.

TikTok says Creator Search Insights helps creators explore popular search topics, while the Creator Rewards dashboard shows content performance, estimated rewards, qualified views, and eligibility. Those tools can inform planning, but they do not disclose an exhaustive recommendation formula or predict an individual video’s results.
The same announcement reported that, in 2024, the TikTok community spent 50% of its time watching videos longer than one minute. This is a company-reported platform-wide figure, not an independent audience study or a forecast that longer videos will work for every creator.

How YouTube Shorts monetization works
YPP has an earlier feature tier and a separate ad-revenue threshold
YouTube’s expanded YouTube Partner Program overview describes an earlier application route for eligible creators to access features such as fan funding and Shopping. It requires 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the prior 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.
That earlier tier is not the same as eligibility for ad and Premium revenue. The overview lists a separate threshold of 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours over 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views over 90 days. Country availability, policy compliance, account setup, and feature-specific requirements also apply. Check the current eligibility shown in YouTube Studio before planning around a threshold.

Shorts Feed ads use a pooled allocation
According to YouTube’s Shorts monetization policy, Shorts Feed ad revenue is pooled. A Creator Pool is allocated using eligible engaged views in each country, with music usage considered in forming the pool; monetizing creators receive an allocation based on their share of engaged views in that country. Creators keep 45% of their allocation, whether or not music was used.
That 45% is not 45% of every ad shown alongside a specific Short, and YouTube does not present it as a fixed per-view rate. The policy page states a monthly Shorts ad and Premium revenue threshold of 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days and announces a policy change beginning February 1, 2027. Discovery: more surfaces do not guarantee more reach
YouTube says viewers may find Shorts in the Shorts feed, search results, the homepage, a channel homepage, subscriptions, and notifications. These give a Short multiple possible entry points and may be useful when a creator is building a channel with more than short-form videos.
TikTok’s Rewards announcement treats search value as a reward factor and points to Creator Search Insights for popular topics. The reviewed materials do not disclose a complete, comparable ranking formula for the two platforms. A search surface, reward factor, or additional entry point is not a promise of distribution, views, or audience growth.

Originality, reused clips, and eligibility
Both earning paths depend on original work that follows platform rules. TikTok’s announcement requires high-quality original videos and compliance with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube’s Shorts policy identifies non-original or artificial views, as well as views inconsistent with advertiser-friendly guidelines, as ineligible for revenue sharing.
YouTube gives examples including unedited third-party clips, reuploads, and compilations without original additions. Its channel monetization policies say that in July 2025 it clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its “inauthentic content” policy name; the page says the reused-content policy did not change. Adding meaningful original contribution matters, but it does not by itself resolve copyright or other policy questions. Review the relevant platform rules before republishing work.

- Match the program to your natural video length. TikTok Creator Rewards specifies videos longer than one minute. Avoid stretching or cutting a format solely to chase an unverified payout advantage.
- Decide whether you are building a channel or a short-video presence. YouTube can connect Shorts to long-form viewing and other YPP features; compare that broader opportunity with the tools and audience you actually intend to use.
- Track your own results. Use each platform’s analytics and eligible-view or reward reporting to assess how your original content performs. Do not use another creator’s reported earnings as a guaranteed forecast for your account.
