If the battery is worn, replacement is possible, but opening the glass-backed phone involves heat, fragile parts and lithium-ion battery risks. The compatible battery is model G020I-B (part G823-00148-01); confirm you have a Pixel 4, not a Pixel 4 XL or Pixel 4a, before ordering.
Check whether the battery needs replacing
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and look for an app using an unusual share of power in the foreground or background. A recent update or setup can also cause temporarily higher drain while the phone downloads and optimizes software. Google says Adaptive Battery and app optimization can take a few weeks to settle after setup or a factory reset.
- Keep Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization enabled.
- Reduce screen brightness and choose a shorter screen timeout.
- On Pixel 4, turn off Smooth Display or Motion Sense if you do not need them.
These changes can reduce avoidable drain; they cannot restore capacity lost through battery aging. Do not look for an 80% charging limit on Pixel 4: Google documents that feature for Pixel 6a and later. Adaptive Charging does apply to Pixel 4 in a specific overnight situation: the phone must charge between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m., with an active alarm set between 3 a.m. and 10 a.m>. Identify the correct Pixel 4 battery
Google specifies the Pixel 4 battery capacity as 2800 mAh; the publication year is not stated on Google’s accessed specifications page. iFixit’s genuine-part listing agrees and identifies battery model G020I-B, part G823-00148-01, as compatible with US and global Pixel 4 models. The listing gives 10.78 Wh and 3.85 V for that battery; its publication year is not stated.

Those identifiers are useful when comparing parts, but do not assume every marketplace listing is genuine or suitable. Check the exact phone model, seller, battery condition, adhesive inclusion and return terms. iFixit’s product listing is a compatibility reference: Google Pixel 4 genuine battery.
Choose DIY or professional repair

iFixit classifies its repair as “Moderate” and estimates 1–2 hours. Those are the guide publisher’s difficulty rating and estimate, not a guaranteed time for every device or repairer. Prepare safely before opening the phone
Do not attempt this procedure if the battery is swollen or the back glass is lifting. Google advises against pressing the cover back down or trying to open, take apart or fix the device yourself. Follow Google’s swollen-battery guidance for repair options or local recycling guidance. Do not apply pressure, heat or prying force to a swollen phone.
For a normal battery replacement, back up important information and power the phone off. iFixit’s guide says: “For your safety, discharge your battery below 25% before disassembling your phone.” The lower charge reduces the risk associated with accidental battery damage, but does not eliminate it.

- A compatible Pixel 4 replacement battery and new stretch-release adhesive or suitable double-sided/pre-cut battery adhesive.
- Opening picks, a suction handle and an iOpener or other carefully controlled heat source.
- Tweezers, a spudger and a T3 Torx screwdriver.
- Isopropyl alcohol at 90% or greater and a lint-free cloth.
These are the tool and material types listed in the iFixit guide. A kit is not automatically suitable just because it is sold for phone repair; check that it includes the required types and that the battery and adhesive fit Pixel 4.

Replace the battery using the illustrated guide
The following is an orientation, not a substitute for the guide’s photos and connector-by-connector sequence. Follow the linked iFixit instructions at each stage rather than guessing where to pry or disconnect parts.
- Warm and lift the back glass. Warm the bottom edge carefully to soften its adhesive. Use a suction tool and opening pick to lift the panel gradually. Do not overheat the phone: excessive heat can damage the display and internal battery.
- Open the phone and disconnect components as shown. Work through the guide’s illustrated steps before trying to lift the battery. Do not insert a pick on or below the grip sensor cable; the charge-port flex cable runs underneath the battery.
- Remove the old battery carefully. Use the guide’s specified method. If pull tabs break, use an opening pick only where and as the guide instructs. Do not reuse a battery that becomes deformed or damaged.
- Fit new adhesive and compare the batteries. Keep adhesive clear of the charge-port flex cable. Compare the replacement with the original and check for components or adhesive backings that may need to be transferred.
- Install the replacement and reassemble. Follow the illustrated guide in reverse order, ensuring connectors and adhesive are correctly positioned before closing the phone.
The guide warns of hazardous, invisible infrared laser emissions if the front laser assembly is disassembled. A battery replacement does not call for dismantling that assembly; do not do so.
After installation and battery disposal
iFixit’s genuine-part instructions recommend calibrating a newly installed battery by charging it fully, leaving it connected for two more hours, using it until it shuts down from low battery, and then charging it uninterrupted to 100%. This is the seller’s recommendation, not a Google requirement.

Take an ordinary removed lithium-ion battery to an appropriate battery or e-waste collection point rather than putting it in household waste. iFixit names R2- or e-Stewards-certified recyclers as options; follow local rules for collection and transport. If the battery was swollen, use Google’s guidance instead of handling or removing it yourself.
What a new battery will not change
A replacement may address reduced battery capacity, but it cannot guarantee a particular runtime improvement; no controlled Pixel 4 replacement benchmark establishes one. It also does not restore software support. Google says Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL no longer receive Android version or security updates, so a battery replacement keeps the hardware in use without restarting updates.
