Choose a workshop wet/dry vac by matching it to the debris and jobs you actually have: how far it must reach, whether you need wet pickup, how it connects to portable tools, and what filtration those tasks require. Drum gallons and peak horsepower alone do not tell you how well a vac will suit your shop. For stationary woodworking machinery or silica-generating work, a general-purpose shop vac may not provide the source capture or controls the task needs.

Start with the work your vacuum will do

List the jobs before comparing models. A vac used mostly for occasional sawdust and garage cleanup has different needs from one that must collect debris from portable tools, handle frequent spills, or move around a large shop.

  • Routine dry cleanup: Check that the included filter is specified for the debris you collect, such as general dirt and sawdust.
  • Wet pickup: Confirm the manual’s wet-use instructions and whether you need to change or remove a filter before collecting liquids. A drain can make a larger drum easier to empty.
  • Portable power tools: Verify the hose or adapter fits the tool port and that the vacuum can meet the tool maker’s airflow recommendation.
  • Stationary woodworking machines: Assess a dedicated dust collector or machine-specific source-capture setup rather than assuming a general cleanup vac is sufficient.

Also consider where the vacuum will live and travel. A compact unit is easier to carry and store; a larger one can offer more drum volume, longer reach, a larger hose, or a drain, but takes more room and can be less convenient to move.

Compare capacity, reach, and mobility

Drum gallons describe nominal container volume, not how much usable debris the vacuum will collect before it needs attention. RIDGID cautions that actual capacity varies with debris type, filter condition, and other factors. Think about how often you are willing to empty the drum, whether you need to roll or carry the machine, and whether the cord and hose reach your work areas without frequent repositioning.

Manufacturer specifications illustrate why no single size label determines the best choice. RIDGID’s current example pages list these figures; they are product specifications, not the results of a standardized independent head-to-head test. [HD0600 6-gallon specifications; HD0900 and HD1400 specifications]

Example model Published airflow and lift Hose and cord Filter positioning
RIDGID HD0600, 6 gallons 64 CFM; 67 inches of lift 1-7/8-inch hose; 10-foot cord Included general-debris filter; described as compact for smaller workspaces
RIDGID HD0900, 9 gallons 76 CFM; 70 inches of lift 1-7/8-inch hose; 10-foot cord General-debris filter; positioned for general garage or shop cleanup
RIDGID HD1400, 14 gallons 165 CFM; 56 inches of lift 2-1/2-inch hose; 20-foot cord Fine-dust filter; positioned for large-volume messes or heavy-duty cleanup

RIDGID says the cited CFM figures are based on average motor performance; its peak-horsepower figure represents a laboratory motor-output level, and drum gallons are not necessarily collection capacity. The HD0600 page says air-watt specifications are tested to an ASTM standard. Do not treat the listed numbers as one controlled comparison or assume the model with the largest CFM is best for every task.

Read airflow, lift, and hose size together

CFM (cubic feet per minute) describes airflow; lift describes suction pressure under the manufacturer’s stated specification. They measure different aspects of performance. Hose diameter also matters: a larger hose can handle larger debris and is common on larger vacs, while a smaller hose may be easier to manage or connect to a portable tool. The tool, hose, fittings, filter, and debris all affect how well the collection setup works.

Before buying a vac for tool hookup, check the tool maker’s airflow recommendation and compare it with the vacuum’s published specification. Then verify the hose and adapter diameters at both ends. A fitting that physically attaches does not establish that the setup supplies enough airflow for the tool or meets a dust-control requirement.

Choose filtration for the dust and disposal method

Use the filter and bag that the vacuum maker identifies as compatible with the exact model and intended material. A “fine-dust” label by itself does not mean a filter is HEPA-rated, that the whole vacuum achieves HEPA-level filtration, or that the setup satisfies workplace exposure rules.

As one model-specific example, RIDGID states that its VF6000 HEPA-media filter and VF3602 cyclonic dust bag must be used together in select 12- to 16-gallon vacs for the stated HEPA-level filtration. That claim does not apply automatically to other models, filters, or bags. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying replacements. [RIDGID HEPA-level filtration details]

Know when a shop vac is not the dust-control system you need

Portable-tool and silica-generating tasks

For specified construction tasks, OSHA’s silica standard, 29 CFR 1926.1153 Table 1, sets task-specific requirements when an employer follows that control method. Depending on the task, requirements include a dust collector meeting or exceeding the tool manufacturer’s airflow recommendation, a filter with at least 99% efficiency, and a filter-cleaning mechanism or cyclonic pre-separator. The exact requirements vary by task; a household wet/dry vac is not automatically compliant because it is marketed as a shop vac or includes a fine-dust filter. • TWO-IN-ONE CAPABILITY: Shop vacuum can be used as a blower for added versatility
  • DESIGNED FOR TIGHT SPACES: 1-1/4 in. shop vacuum accessories allow for maneuverability in tight areas

OSHA’s standard also restricts dry sweeping or dry brushing where it could contribute to respirable crystalline silica exposure, unless wet sweeping, HEPA-filtered vacuuming, or another method that minimizes exposure is infeasible. This is workplace guidance for the situations covered by the regulation, not a blanket endorsement of a particular consumer vacuum.

Table saws, planers, and other stationary woodworking machines

OSHA’s woodworking guidance identifies local exhaust ventilation (LEV)—collecting dust at or near its source—as the primary method of controlling wood dust, with capture at the point of operation where feasible. A general-purpose vac for floor and bench cleanup may not substitute for a collector designed to capture dust from a table saw, planer, or similar machine. Use this final fit check before choosing

  1. Write down the routine debris, any wet-pickup jobs, and whether you will connect portable tools.
  2. Choose a drum size and form factor that fit the cleanup volume, storage space, and need to carry or roll the vac.
  3. Compare published CFM and lift alongside hose diameter, hose length, cord length, and tool requirements—not in isolation.
  4. Confirm included floor, wet, utility, or crevice tools and whether hose and accessory storage suit your shop.
  5. Check filter and bag compatibility for the exact model and debris, plus maintenance and disposal instructions.
  6. If the job involves stationary machine dust or silica exposure, determine whether source-capture equipment and task-specific controls are required instead of relying on general-purpose cleanup equipment.
