Choose digital if you prefer an account-managed library and have room and internet access for downloads. The key exception: a game-key card is physical but does not contain the full game—it needs an initial download and enough storage, and the card must stay inserted to play.
First, check what “physical” means for the game
Switch 2 games may come as standard game cards, game-key cards, or—in some physical packages—a download code rather than a card. These are not interchangeable. Check the exact box label and store listing before buying.

Standard game card
A standard game card contains the game data on the card. You can use physical games on any compatible console by inserting the card. This is the closest fit if you want to carry the game itself between systems rather than rely on a digital license.
Game-key card
A game-key card is a physical key, not a copy of the full game. The game downloads to system memory or a microSD Express card. Nintendo says an internet connection is required when launching it for the first time on a system; after download it can launch offline, but the game-key card must still be inserted. A Nintendo Account is not required for this download. Check the game’s stated free-space requirement on its packaging or Nintendo store listing. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card Overview
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Physical packaging with a download code
Some publishers may sell Switch 2 Edition games in physical packaging that contains a download code instead of a game card. The packaging and listing for the specific release determine what you receive. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ
Compare the practical trade-offs
| What matters | Standard game card | Game-key card | Digital purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the game data is | On the game card | Downloaded to system memory or microSD Express; the card acts as a key | Downloaded to system memory or microSD Express |
| Internet for initial access | Not generally needed to read game data from the card; game-specific updates or online features may still need internet | Required to download the game and launch it the first time on a system | Required to download the game |
| Play offline after setup | Yes, subject to any game-specific online requirements | Yes, after download; the key card must be inserted | Yes with a Virtual Game Card loaded on the console; online-license play requires an internet check when opening |
| Storage for the full game | Generally not needed for the base game data on the card; updates and other content may use storage | Required for the download | Required for the download |
| Use across consoles | Move the card and insert it in the other console | Move the card, but each system needs the download | Virtual Game Card can be loaded on up to two linked Switch or Switch 2 consoles; online licenses work on three or more systems under Nintendo’s rules |

How digital access works on more than one console
Nintendo eShop purchases can be used as Virtual Game Cards or through online licenses. Digital does not simply mean “always online”: the access method determines whether the game can launch offline, which users can play it, and how many systems can use it.

Virtual Game Card
A Virtual Game Card can be loaded on up to two linked Switch or Switch 2 consoles. On a console where it is loaded, it can be played offline and by other users of that console. Moving it between linked consoles requires both consoles to be powered on or in sleep mode and connected to the internet for the swap. Nintendo also allows lending to members of the purchasing account’s family group. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card Guide

An online license can be used on three or more systems, but opening the game requires an internet connection, and only users linked with the purchasing Nintendo Account can play it. Under either access method, the same game cannot be played simultaneously on multiple systems. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ
Storage and save data are separate questions
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with a portion reserved for system use; that figure is not the amount of free space available to games. Nintendo says no individual game currently requires additional storage to play, but downloads and game-key card installs can still take substantial room. Switch 2 software storage uses microSD Express; conventional microSD cards are not compatible for storing Switch 2 software. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ and compatibility information

Save data is stored in system memory, not on a microSD Express card. For the most part, it follows the user regardless of whether the game is on a card or downloaded. Deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data. Nintendo Switch Online members can use Save Data Cloud for supported games. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ

- Choose a standard game card if you want the game data on a removable card, plan to move it between consoles, or prefer not to download the full game.
- Choose digital if an account-managed library suits you and you can accommodate the download and storage. Decide whether offline play and access by other users on a console matter enough to use a Virtual Game Card rather than an online license.
- Choose a game-key card only with the download in mind: it is physical to handle, but needs internet for its first launch on a system, free storage for the game, and the card inserted for play afterward.
- Before paying for any “physical” edition, confirm whether the specific package contains a standard card, a game-key card, or only a download code.
Moving from an original Switch to Switch 2
Nintendo supports transferring digital games and certain data from an original Switch to Switch 2 with System Transfer. Online features and some backup options depend on the account and Nintendo Switch Online requirements. Physical games can be used on any console, while digital access remains subject to Virtual Game Card or online-license rules. Nintendo’s Accounts FAQ and Switch 2 Transfer Guide
