Organize a gaming desk by sorting cables into three routes: the fixed equipment cluster, the leads that move with a monitor or adjustable desk, and the run from desk to wall. A tray can contain a stable group of cables and adapters; raceways and clips guide other runs. Keep often-swapped connections reachable, leave movement slack, and test the full range of motion before securing everything.
1. Map every cable before choosing an organizer
Trace each lead from its device to its destination. Label or note whether it carries power, display, data, audio, or charging, and mark the connections you regularly unplug. This prevents a tidy-looking bundle from making a routine headset, controller, or monitor change difficult.
Divide the route into three sections:
- Stable equipment area: cables for devices that stay in place, such as a desktop PC, dock, or power strip.
- Moving leads: cables attached to a monitor arm or another part that moves as you reposition equipment or raise and lower the desk.
- Desk-to-wall run: the path from the desk to a wall outlet or other destination. Keep it orderly without trapping it beneath furniture or in a pinch point.
This separation is also recommended in Hexcal’s gaming-desk cable-management guide.
2. Measure the desk and check moving parts
Before buying or mounting hardware, inspect the underside and the route each cable will take. Check available space, frame rails, drawers, existing grommets, the gap behind the desk, and where the desk or monitor arm travels. A tray that fits the desktop’s width may still conflict with a frame rail or drawer.

| Organizer | Useful for | Check before installing |
|---|---|---|
| Under-desk tray | Containing a stable group of cables, adapters, and, depending on the model, a power strip. | Underside clearance, fit around frame rails, and the product’s mounting method. StarTech’s UDCMTRAY is one documented example; its product page describes cable and power-strip concealment. |
| Raceway or channel | Guiding cables along a desk edge, leg, or wall in a defined line. | Whether the surface and mounting method suit the specific product. NexaRig describes adhesive J-channel as an option, but adhesive compatibility and holding strength depend on the product and surface. |
| Clips | Guiding individual leads along an edge or keeping them from slipping behind the desk. | How the clip attaches, whether it fits the cable, and whether the lead remains easy to remove. |
| Reusable ties | Gathering a small bundle while keeping it adjustable for changes. | Do not tighten a bundle so much that cables are difficult to identify, replace, or separate. |
| Integrated desk routing | Using a tray, rail, or tie-down points built into a particular desk. | Confirm what is included and the routing features for the exact model; these features are not universal. CORSAIR documents routing features on its Platform:6 and Platform:4 desks. |
For an under-desk tray, check its actual dimensions and mounting instructions against your desk rather than assuming that every tray fits every frame. StarTech’s UDCMTRAY quick-start guide specifies screw mounting, which may not suit every tabletop or frame.
4. Install in a way that preserves access
- Group only stable cables together. Keep fixed equipment runs separate from leads that need to move with a monitor or desk.
- Place organizers along the planned route. Use a tray for a contained cluster, a raceway for a linear path, and clips or reusable ties to guide individual cables.
- Follow the specific mounting instructions. Check whether the organizer uses screws or adhesive and whether that method is compatible with the desk surface and frame. Do not assume an adhesive product will stick securely to every finish.
- Leave frequently changed connections accessible. Avoid closing a raceway or tightening a bundle around cables you regularly swap.
- Test before finalizing. Move the desk and monitor through their full normal range, then try a routine device swap. Adjust the route if a cable catches, pulls tight, or becomes hard to reach.
5. Keep power routing sensible
A cable tray is for organization; it does not change a power strip’s ratings or replace the desk and product installation instructions. NexaRig’s under-desk cable-management guide advises plugging a marked surge protector directly into the wall, avoiding chained power strips, and not routing cords under rugs. Those are secondary-source recommendations, not detailed electrical guidance from a regulator. For electrical questions, consult the relevant official authority and follow the power strip’s instructions.
