A Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card is a physical card that lets you download a game; it does not hold the full game data. You need an internet connection and enough storage for the initial download. Once downloaded, Nintendo says you can play offline, but the card must stay inserted.
How a Game-Key Card works
Insert the card into your Switch 2 and follow the HOME Menu instructions to download the game data over the internet. Choose system memory or a microSD Express card as the download location, and make sure it has enough free space. The required storage amount is specific to the game and is shown on its packaging.

Nintendo does not require a Nintendo Account to download the game data. Save data is stored in the console’s internal storage, according to Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ.
When you need internet—and when you need the card
An internet connection is required for the initial download and first launch. After that, Nintendo says the game can start without an internet connection. The Game-Key Card must still be inserted whenever you play, just like a regular physical game card. If you plan to use the game somewhere without internet, complete the download beforehand. See Nintendo’s Game-Key Card overview for the setup steps.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
What to check before buying
- Confirm the format. Switch 2 physical games may be regular game cards or Game-Key Cards; not every physical release uses the key-card format. Nintendo’s UK page says a Game-Key Card has a key icon at the top right of the front, and its packaging identifies the format: Nintendo UK’s Game-Key Card explanation.
- Check the download size and available storage. The game itself is downloaded to the console or a microSD Express card, not stored in full on the Game-Key Card. Look at the package or the game’s digital store page for the title’s storage requirement before deciding whether you need more space.
- Plan for the initial download. You will need internet to download and launch the game for the first time. Download it before taking the console somewhere offline.
- Keep the physical card available. Downloading the game does not remove the card requirement; it must be inserted to play.
- Do not confuse it with a virtual game card. Nintendo describes virtual game cards as a way to load and eject digital purchases. A Game-Key Card is a physical card that must be inserted for play.
Can you use a Game-Key Card on another Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo says you can insert the Game-Key Card into another Switch 2 and complete the same download steps there. That console also needs an internet connection for the initial download and enough free storage for the game data. Nintendo’s UK Game-Key Card page describes using the card on a second system.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the format is intended to accommodate larger game data sizes on Switch 2 than on the original Switch. In the English translation of Nintendo’s 2025 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders Q&A Summary, Q16, Furukawa called it “one of the new software distribution methods” introduced for that reason. This is Nintendo’s stated rationale; it does not mean every publisher or Switch 2 title uses Game-Key Cards.
