For Nintendo Switch 2, choose a card explicitly labeled microSD Express (often marked with the microSD EX symbol). Ordinary microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards—including cards used in the original Switch—cannot store or load games on Switch 2. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB.
Check compatibility before comparing capacity or speed
Nintendo Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards. A high-capacity card or one with a fast UHS speed rating is not enough if it is not an Express card. Look for “microSD Express” or the EX mark on the card and packaging, and check that the specific product listing explicitly identifies it as compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. A regular microSD card from the original Switch cannot save or load digital games or save data on Switch 2. Nintendo does allow one limited use: an old card can be used to import captured screenshots and videos into Switch 2 system memory. The console requires an internet system update the first time you use a microSD Express card; if the setup prompt or menu differs, check Nintendo Support because requirements can change with system updates.
Choose capacity for the games and downloads you keep installed
Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB, and the card is sold separately. Downloadable games, game updates, DLC, screenshots, and videos can be stored on the card. Game save data stays in console system memory and cannot be copied or saved to the card. See Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ.

Estimate capacity from the software you want available without redownloading, then compare the cost of suitable cards and leave space for updates and future downloads. Nominal capacity is not all available for user storage, and game sizes vary, so manufacturer game-count estimates are only rough guides—not guarantees.
Compare product specifications without treating them as console benchmarks
These examples are documented by their manufacturers. The speeds are published maximum ratings, not independent tests or a controlled comparison of game loading on Switch 2.

Manufacturers publish maximum speeds under specified conditions and with capable hosts. SanDisk notes that actual performance depends on the host, interface, usage conditions, and other factors; Samsung also notes variation by environment. These figures do not establish that a higher advertised speed makes Switch 2 games load proportionally faster. Warranty terms and duration can vary by region; check the terms for the card and country where you buy it. The product sheets do not establish current prices, stock, or seller availability.

Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card, though data can be copied to a larger replacement. If you expect to upgrade, follow Nintendo’s data-copy instructions rather than relying on several cards as a combined library.

If Switch 2 does not recognize the card
- Confirm the card type. Check that it is microSD Express, not a standard microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card. Nintendo’s compatibility guide explains the supported type.
- Inspect the contacts and slot. Nintendo advises checking both for dirt or debris. Follow Nintendo’s card-not-recognized troubleshooting for further steps.
- Complete initial setup if prompted. First use of a microSD Express card requires an internet system update according to Nintendo’s compatibility guidance.
