A carrier settings update refreshes the network configuration your iPhone uses to connect to your mobile provider. It may improve connectivity or add support for features such as 5G or Wi-Fi Calling, but it cannot create coverage where the carrier has no service, activate an ineligible plan, or guarantee that every network problem will go away.
What does a carrier settings update do on an iPhone?
Carrier settings are configuration information provided by your mobile carrier. Apple says updates can improve cellular network connectivity and performance or add support for carrier features, including 5G and Wi-Fi Calling. Those are possible purposes, not a guarantee of a particular improvement on your phone. Feature availability depends on your carrier, device, plan, and region. Apple’s carrier settings guidance describes when updates may be offered.

A settings update can be especially relevant after you set up a new eSIM or insert a new SIM: the iPhone may need to download settings for the new provider.
How to check for and install an update
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi or a mobile network.
- Open Settings > General > About.
- If an update prompt appears, follow the onscreen instructions. If you previously dismissed a prompt, this About screen is Apple’s manual check path.
Apple says an ordinary installation takes less than a minute and you can continue using the phone. Some updates are mandatory and install automatically; you may see an OK prompt rather than an Update option. The installed carrier settings version is also shown in Settings > General > About. Contact your carrier if you need to confirm whether it is the latest version. Apple’s instructions cover the update prompt and version check.

What a carrier update cannot fix by itself
The update is not a coverage upgrade, a new service plan, or a replacement for an available carrier network. Apple notes that an iPhone has no cellular voice or data service when the carrier’s network is unavailable. If service remains unavailable after installing an update, check whether the carrier has coverage at your location and whether your line and plan are active, then ask the carrier to verify account, network, and settings details. Apple’s guidance directs customers to their provider for network services, billing, voicemail, and carrier-dependent feature availability; it does not diagnose every possible cause of an individual line problem. Apple’s iPhone cellular settings guide explains that service depends on network availability.
Carrier settings update or “Cellular Settings Updated”?
These are different kinds of updates. Apple says a “Cellular Settings Updated” notice means an update was made to the cellular modem configurations. The modem is configured to connect to cellular networks such as 2G, 3G, 4G (LTE), and 5G; its configuration updates happen automatically. They do not affect your carrier settings or data plan and require no action. The notice is therefore not evidence that a carrier settings update was installed or that your plan changed. Apple’s explanation of the message states that your data plan and carrier settings are not affected.

| Update type | What it concerns | What you need to do | Effect on plan or carrier settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrier settings update | Carrier-provided network configuration; may improve connectivity or support features. | Follow an update prompt, or check Settings > General > About. | Concerns carrier settings; it is not a plan change. |
| Cellular modem configuration update | Configuration that keeps the modem connected to cellular networks. | No action; these updates happen automatically. | Apple says it does not affect carrier settings or the data plan. |
Why 5G and Wi-Fi Calling may still be unavailable
A carrier settings update may add support for a feature, but it cannot make an unsupported carrier, region, device, or plan support that feature. For 5G, check that your carrier supports it and that your plan is eligible; Apple’s 5G guidance recommends confirming carrier support and plan availability.
Wi-Fi Calling also depends on carrier and country or region availability. If it is supported but missing or failing, check that it is enabled for the intended line, restart the iPhone, try another Wi-Fi network, or toggle Wi-Fi Calling. Apple lists resetting network settings as a later troubleshooting step; this can remove saved network settings, so use it only after simpler checks. If the feature still does not work, contact the carrier. See Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling instructions.

What to do when the problem continues
- You dismissed an update prompt: Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular, then check Settings > General > About.
- You changed SIM or eSIM: Check for settings associated with the new carrier using the same About screen.
- You still have no signal or service: Check local carrier availability and contact the carrier about your line and network service; an update cannot supply coverage where the network is unavailable.
- You need to know whether settings are current: Ask the carrier to verify the latest version.
