Check battery health in Settings > Battery, then open Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later or Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier. To investigate fast drain, use the Battery screen’s activity details to identify apps or system activity using power, then try Low Power Mode if you need to conserve charge.
Check your iPhone battery health
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Tap Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later. On iPhone 14 and earlier, tap Battery Health & Charging.
- Review Maximum Capacity and Peak Performance Capability. On iPhone 15 and later, the screen can also show cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date. Apple documents these model-specific details in its iOS 26 iPhone guide.
What Maximum Capacity means
Maximum Capacity compares the battery’s current capacity with its capacity when new. It is not a direct promise of how many hours your iPhone will run: real-world battery life depends on use and charging, and capacity declines as the battery chemically ages.
Peak Performance Capability describes a different aspect: whether the battery can deliver power for normal peak demands. As a battery ages, increased impedance can make instantaneous power delivery less reliable. After an unexpected shutdown, iOS may apply performance management to reduce the chance of another shutdown. That message does not by itself mean the phone is defective.
Find what is draining the battery
- Go to Settings > Battery.
- Review the usage chart and activity for the relevant day or period. Check which apps and system activity used power.
- Tap an app for more detail, then consider whether its activity or your usage explains the drain. Apple describes this Battery view in its rapid battery drain guidance and iPhone user guide.
Reduce power use with Low Power Mode
When you need to stretch the remaining charge, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode and turn on Low Power Mode. It reduces or disables selected features, which can include Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. Apple says Low Power Mode turns off automatically after the charge rises above 80%.

Adaptive Power availability
On iOS 26 or later, Adaptive Power is available only on specified models: iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Check your iPhone’s current Power Mode settings for availability; it is not offered on every iPhone.
Know when battery service may be appropriate
If Battery Health shows Service, follow Apple’s service instructions or contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple says a significantly degraded battery can be replaced by an authorized provider, but its cited guidance does not set one percentage as a universal replacement threshold. Understand cycle count and Apple’s capacity figures
A charge cycle is reached when you have used a total of 100% of the battery’s capacity; that use does not have to happen in one uninterrupted discharge from full to empty. Apple’s cycle-life figures are design specifications under ideal conditions, not guarantees for an individual phone:

Reduce battery aging while charging
Use optimized charging or a charge limit
Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the time your iPhone spends fully charged. It can pause charging at 80% and finish closer to when you typically disconnect the phone. It learns your routine, so it may not activate when charging habits are inconsistent or you are in a new location.
- iPhone 15 and later: Go to Settings > Battery > Charging to find Charge Limit.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging for Optimized Battery Charging.
Apple says a limit below 100% may occasionally be followed by a full charge to maintain accurate state-of-charge estimates. See Apple’s charging optimization guidance.

Avoid prolonged heat
Apple says ambient temperatures above 95°F (35°C) can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Avoid leaving your iPhone in prolonged heat, such as direct sunlight. Very cold conditions can temporarily reduce battery life; that effect resolves when the battery returns to its normal operating range. Apple’s temperature guidance has more detail.
