Move it out of direct sunlight or a hot car to a cooler place and let it cool. If a temperature warning appears, turn the iPhone off and wait. If it says “Charging On Hold,” move it somewhere cooler; charging will resume automatically when the temperature returns to normal.
First, tell ordinary warmth from overheating
An iPhone can feel warm during first-time setup, backup restoration, a software update, wireless charging, graphics-intensive games, camera use, or high-quality video streaming. Apple says warmth during these activities can be normal and that the device should cool after the activity ends. If there is no temperature warning, Apple says you can keep using it: Apple Support: If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold.
A temperature warning is different from a phone that simply feels warm. iPhone is designed for use in ambient temperatures of 0–35°C (32–95°F). Avoid extended direct sunlight and hot vehicles; use outside the recommended range can affect operation, and very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life. Apple lists a separate storage range of −20–45°C (−4–113°F), which is not a safe operating or charging range.
What to do when your iPhone is too hot
- Stop the heat-producing activity. Close or pause games, camera recording, navigation, streaming, or other intensive tasks. Stop charging as well if the phone is hot.
- Move it to a cooler environment. Take it out of sunlight or a hot car and place it somewhere cooler, away from other heat sources.
- If a temperature warning screen appears, turn the iPhone off. Leave it powered down while it cools. Apple notes that emergency calls may still be possible while the warning is displayed; do not rely on the phone for ordinary use during the alert.
- Wait for it to cool naturally. Apple’s guidance is to move the device to a cooler place and allow it to cool. Do not use rapid-cooling methods.
High internal temperature can trigger protective behavior: charging may slow or stop, the display may dim or go black, cellular signal may weaken, some camera functions may be temporarily disabled, and performance may drop. During navigation, a temperature alert can turn off the display while audio directions continue.

Why iPhone says “Charging On Hold”
“Charging On Hold” means the iPhone is temporarily too hot or too cold to charge. The temperature protection applies to cable, MagSafe, and other wireless charging. If the phone is hot, move it away from direct sunlight and into a cooler place. If you are using it, lock the screen or put it to sleep. Wireless charging can make an iPhone feel warm. If the warmth becomes recurring while charging, check the environment and airflow rather than treating a charging pause as proof that the battery is faulty. Apple’s guide recommends charging in an ambient range of 0–35°C (32–95°F): Understand Thermally Limited Charging on iPhone.

How to prevent iPhone overheating
- Keep the iPhone out of parked cars and prolonged direct sunlight, especially when using navigation, games, or the camera.
- Avoid using or charging it in ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F); the recommended ambient range for charging is 0–35°C (32–95°F).
- Charge in a well-ventilated area, and keep the phone and charging equipment clear of heat-trapping surroundings.
- If the phone tends to heat while charging, remove its case and see whether that reduces the heat buildup.
- When a demanding activity is finished, give the phone time to cool before starting another intensive task or charging it in a hot environment.
Apple’s battery-care article describes 16–22°C (62–72°F) as an ideal ambient range, but that is an ideal, not a required operating temperature: Charge and maintain your iPhone battery.

Stop using the iPhone if it or its battery appears damaged, and contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple says battery repair should be performed by a trained technician; do not open the phone or attempt a DIY battery replacement. A temperature warning that persists after the phone has cooled is also a reason to seek trained service rather than assume a particular component has failed.
