Older Discord instructions describe moving and resizing overlay widgets and changing notification placement, but those controls may not appear in today’s client. Here’s how to use the current controls and what to try if you have the older interface.
Enable the Discord overlay and open it in-game

In the Discord desktop app, select the gear beside your username to open User Settings, then select Overlay.

Enable the overlay. Discord’s current guide lists Shift+` as the default overlay keybind; use the keybind shown in your settings if it has been changed.

Show or hide overlay windows
When the overlay is open, Discord’s current guide describes using the pin control to show or hide supported windows, including Notifications, Voice, Video, Activity, and Streams. This is the current documented way to reduce clutter or bring a supported window back into view; it is not a control for moving or resizing the whole overlay.
Change message visibility and notification placement
Show new messages over gameplay
In User Settings > Game Overlay, enable Messages to show new direct-message, group, and server messages in-game. Discord says messages will not display if the relevant DM, group, or server is muted, or if Streamer Mode is on. These controls determine whether messages appear in the overlay; they do not set the on-screen position of a pop-up.

Move notification pop-ups in older clients
Discord’s older “Games Overlay 101” guide describes a setting at User Settings > Overlay > Overlay Notifications for changing notification placement or turning notifications off. Treat this as legacy, version-dependent guidance: if your client does not show that menu, the current guide does not document an equivalent placement control. Server and channel notification settings are separate from the overlay’s visual placement. Discord’s Notifications Settings 101 describes server-level notification customization and notes that game activity notifications are an experiment on desktop; changing those settings should not be assumed to move overlay pop-ups. Change voice-widget details, not overall overlay size
Current overlay settings provide controls for how voice participants appear. You can choose whether users are always shown or appear only while speaking, set names to always show, show only while speaking, or stay hidden, and choose Large or Small avatars. Discord also provides a preview of the voice widget. The avatar-size choice applies to the widget’s avatars; the current guide does not specify a general scale control for the overlay or its other windows.
Move or resize the overlay: what changed
The older Discord guide describes moving and changing the size of a widget by clicking and holding designated areas. That procedure depends on the older interface. If your current client does not show the described handles or menu, Discord’s current English guide does not provide an equivalent general drag-to-move or drag-to-resize procedure. Use the pin control to show or hide supported windows, or adjust the documented voice-widget options if the voice display is what needs changing.

Troubleshoot an overlay that will not appear

Check platform support: Discord’s April 2, 2025 guide lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as compatible and does not list macOS or Linux.

Try another game display mode: Discord recommends switching to windowed or borderless-windowed mode if the overlay does not work.

Check message-specific blockers: If the overlay opens but messages are missing, confirm that Messages is enabled, the relevant conversation or server is not muted, and Streamer Mode is off.

Distinguish current and older fullscreen guidance: Discord’s known-issue article says the revamped overlay rollout began April 15, 2024, and describes that overlay as working in windowed and borderless fullscreen modes, but not true fullscreen.
