Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a full-resolution copy of your iCloud Photos library, the most complete documented route is to download originals to a Mac, then export the photos and videos to an external drive or store a separate Photos library there. On iPhone or iPad, you can export selected originals directly; iCloud.com and Windows offer other options, with important limits around batch size and whether files are fully downloaded.
Why iCloud Photos alone is not a backup
iCloud Photos keeps your library in sync: edits and deletions are reflected across devices using the service. Apple also says iCloud Photos content is not duplicated in iCloud Backup and advises keeping separate backup copies. That means a synced library is not an independent archive if you want protection from accidental deletion or account access problems. See Apple’s iCloud Photos guidance.
A separate external-drive copy can take either of two forms: regular image and video files that you can browse outside Photos, or a separate Photos library that retains the app’s library structure. Choose the form that fits how you expect to use the copy.
Choose the route that fits your device and goal
| Route | Best for | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Mac Photos with Download Originals | Getting a full-resolution library onto a Mac before copying or exporting it | The Mac needs enough free space for originals. Optimize Mac Storage may keep smaller local versions instead. |
| Mac export or separate library | Standalone files, or a Photos library stored on an external drive | Decide whether you want ordinary files or the Photos app’s library structure. |
| iPhone or iPad export | Copying selected original items without first using a Mac | Connect storage and download originals; Apple documents selecting items, not a one-step full-library export. |
| iCloud.com | Downloading selected items from a browser | Apple’s cited workflow supports batches of up to 1,000 selected items. |
| iCloud for Windows | Accessing iCloud Photos through File Explorer | Make sure originals are downloaded before copying; behavior differs by software version. |
Back up the full library with Photos on a Mac
- Open the Photos app and choose Photos > Settings > iCloud.
- Select Download Originals to this Mac. This stores full-size versions on the Mac as well as in iCloud. Optimize Mac Storage may instead leave smaller versions locally while full-size originals remain in iCloud. Apple explains the options in its Mac Photos download instructions.
- Leave Photos time to download the library. There is no universal completion-time estimate: library size and connection affect the wait. Check that the originals are available locally before treating them as a drive-ready copy.
Choose files or a separate Photos library
- For standalone image and video files: Select the items in Photos and choose File > Export. Apple also documents exporting unmodified originals. Save the exported files to the external drive, then verify that they are present there.
- For a separate Photos library: Store a separate library on the external drive. This preserves a Photos-library copy rather than turning the selection into ordinary browsable files.
Apple’s archive and copy instructions cover exporting media and storing a separate library. The drive must have enough room for the copy; capacity depends on the size of your library, not a universal recommended figure.

Export selected originals from an iPhone or iPad
- Connect an external storage device to the iPhone or iPad.
- In Settings, open your Apple Account’s iCloud Photos settings and choose Download and Keep Originals. Apple’s archive instructions show this setting under iPhone Storage.
- In Photos, select the photos and videos you want to copy.
- Tap Share, choose Export Unmodified Original, select the external device under Files locations, and save.
This is a selected-items workflow, not a documented one-step export of an entire iPhone or iPad library. For a full-library copy, use the Mac route. Apple’s archive instructions describe the mobile export steps.
Download selected items from iCloud.com
Open Photos on iCloud.com, select the items, and download them. Apple offers download choices for unmodified originals, highest resolution, or more-compatible files. Its cited instructions describe selecting up to 1,000 items at a time, so a larger library requires multiple batches.

- Set up iCloud for Windows and access iCloud Photos in File Explorer using Apple’s Windows instructions.
- Download the items you need before copying them. Apple says double-clicking an item downloads it for viewing; a visible thumbnail or synced folder alone does not establish that every full-resolution original is stored on the PC.
- Copy the downloaded files to the external drive, then check the destination to confirm the files are present.
Windows behavior depends on the iCloud for Windows version. Apple’s documentation distinguishes version 11.1 and later from earlier versions, so follow the guidance for the version installed on your PC.

Check the drive and the copy
- Confirm the external drive works with the specific Mac, PC, iPhone, or iPad you plan to use. Connector, adapter, format, and compatibility requirements vary; Apple’s cited workflow pages do not establish one universal setup.
- Allow for the actual size of your library, plus room for the copy. Apple’s workflow documentation gives no universal drive-capacity figure.
- After copying or exporting, open a sample of files from the external drive. For a Photos library, confirm that the separate library is stored on the drive and can be opened as intended.
- Keep in mind that deleting a photo from a device using iCloud Photos deletes it across the other devices using the service. Avoid using the synced library as the only copy you expect to preserve.
