To limit a child’s Shorts scrolling, use YouTube’s daily Shorts feed limit on their supervised account. In the YouTube app signed in with the linked parent account, go to You → Settings → Family Center, select the child’s profile, open Time management, and set the limit. Once the child reaches it, YouTube says they cannot keep scrolling the Shorts feed until the daily reset.
Set up a supervised account if your child does not have one
The Shorts limit is a Family Center control for a supervised account. Choose a setup route that matches the device and account your child uses; Google’s steps and account requirements differ for shared devices and a child’s own account. See YouTube Help’s supervised kid account setup guide.
- Set it up on the parent’s device: In the YouTube app, sign in with the parent’s Google account, open Family Center in Settings, choose add a kid account, and follow the prompts. This shared-device route does not require creating a Google Account for the child.
- Set it up on the child’s device: Sign in to YouTube with the child’s Google Account linked to the parent’s account, then follow the Get started prompts. The parent must enter their own Google Account password to approve.
- Use the web: Visit families.youtube.com while signed in as the parent who manages the child’s family group.
- Use Family Link: In the Family Link app, select the child, then choose Controls → YouTube → YouTube & YouTube Music and follow the prompts.
Set the daily Shorts feed limit
- Open the YouTube app and sign in with the parent account linked to the child’s supervised account.
- Tap You → Settings → Family Center.
- Select the child’s profile and tap Time management.
- Set the daily Shorts feed limit.
You can also manage YouTube supervision settings in Family Link. YouTube’s instructions are for a supervised account, and labels or available options can vary with platform, app version, region, or account type. What happens when the limit is reached?
YouTube says the child sees a notice and can no longer scroll the Shorts feed for the rest of the day; the limit resets each morning. Google’s help page says that Starting in March 2026, parents will have the option to set the daily Shorts feed limit to zero.
A zero-minute setting limits scrolling in the Shorts feed; Google’s description does not promise that every individual short-form video is blocked from every other place in YouTube.

Choose the right option for a child or teen
For a child: supervised YouTube or YouTube Kids
A supervised kid account gives parents access to YouTube content-level settings and channel blocking as well as the Shorts feed limit. YouTube Kids is a separate option: it has its own screen-time settings and lets a parent handpick videos. Choose based on whether your family wants the broader YouTube catalog or a more curated viewing experience, and whether you need content selection or channel blocking in addition to limiting Shorts. For a teen: linked accounts and shared control
Teen supervision is a separate arrangement: the teen and parent link their accounts in Family Center. Supervised teens can have a Shorts scrolling time limit and wellbeing reminders, but this is not an unremovable lock. Either the parent or the teen can turn off supervision.
