To keep a stored car’s battery from going flat, first check the vehicle’s own storage instructions and identify its 12-volt battery type. If the manual permits it, a compatible automatic maintainer is usually the simplest option when power is available. If it does not, follow the maker’s approved isolation and checking procedure instead. Do not assume that disconnecting the battery or attaching a charger is safe for every car—especially a hybrid or EV.
Choose the method your vehicle allows
Storage procedures vary by model. Begin with the vehicle owner’s manual, looking for “vehicle storage,” “battery,” or “long-term parking.” Identify whether the car is conventional, hybrid, or battery-electric, and whether its 12-volt battery may be disconnected or should remain connected to the vehicle’s systems.

For electrified vehicles, keep the 12-volt auxiliary battery separate from the high-voltage traction battery in your thinking. Generic advice about a 12-volt battery is not instructions for charging or maintaining the traction battery. For example, the 2026 Cadillac LYRIQ owner’s manual says, “Do not disconnect the 12-volt battery during storage,” and requires an AGM/VRLA-compatible charger with the appropriate setting if charging is needed. Those instructions apply to that model, not all EVs. Cadillac owner’s manuals
Use a maintainer when the manual and battery permit it
An automatic battery maintainer or conditioner is designed to keep a suitable battery charged during storage. It is not the same as choosing any charger and leaving it connected: confirm the charger supports the installed battery chemistry, select the correct setting, and use the vehicle maker’s approved connection points. Follow both sets of instructions.

- Charger, Maintainer & Desulfator - An all-weather battery charger, battery maintainer, trickle charger, and battery desulfator. Perfect for charging and maintaining all 12-volt lead-acid, flooded or sealed maintenance free batteries (AGM and gel cell).
- Automatic Desulfation & Optimization - Automatic detection of battery sulfation problem. Applying with pulse current technology to desulfate the batteries effectively. Optimize the battery performance during charging without any manual operation.
- Energy Saving & Spark Free - Zero output in standby mode. No battery drain when connecting with the battery. Spark proof during lead connection for safety.
- Multi-level Safety Protection & Timer Set Up - Overcharge, short circuit and reverse polarity protected. Charge the battery up to 14.4V and Maintain the battery at 13.6V for long time to avoid gasing and to extend the battery life. 24-hour Timer is set up in the program to terminate the charge and enter the maintaining mode once the voltage is above 14V to ensure safety.
- Easy Operation -Just plug-in, connect to the battery and start charging or maintaining your battery. The desulfation is working automatically during the charing. No manual operation.
Aston Martin’s May 2022 storage manual recommends a conditioner when a vehicle will be unused for more than two weeks. That is Aston Martin guidance, not a universal time limit. The manual also cautions that a conditioner maintains a small trickle charge but will not effectively charge a discharged battery. Aston Martin vehicle support
Disconnect only if the vehicle manual says to
If mains power is unavailable, the vehicle manual may allow an approved battery-isolation procedure. Chevrolet says removing the negative cable is an option for extended storage of traditional under-hood batteries; its advice is not for electric or hybrid battery systems. Do not transfer that procedure to another vehicle without checking its manual. Follow the manual’s exact sequence and account for possible memory or settings resets. Chevrolet manuals and guides
These approaches are not interchangeable for every car. A maintainer needs compatible equipment and a permitted connection; disconnection is appropriate only where the vehicle maker allows it.
Prepare the battery before storage
- Find the storage instructions. Check the owner’s manual for the vehicle’s storage procedure, permitted charging method, approved terminals, and any restrictions on disconnecting the 12-volt battery.
- Identify the 12-volt battery chemistry. Check the battery label or vehicle documentation. Confirm the maintainer’s chemistry setting matches it.
- Inspect before charging. Look for a swollen or distorted case, leaks, corrosion, or loose connections. Do not charge a damaged or distorted battery; arrange a qualified inspection if you find a problem or are unsure how to proceed.
- Begin with a charged battery. A maintainer is intended to maintain charge, not rescue a deeply discharged or faulty battery. If the battery is low, use the vehicle and battery makers’ charging guidance or seek battery service.
- Connect only as instructed. Use the approved connection points and follow the charger’s instructions, including when to switch it on and off. Keep the charging area ventilated and protect yourself from battery acid and gas.
If you cannot leave a maintainer connected
Use manual checks only when the vehicle’s instructions permit the relevant storage procedure. Record the voltage and follow a checking interval and recharge threshold intended for that battery; published recommendations differ rather than establishing one universal schedule.

| Guidance source | Checking interval | Recharge guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Yuasa Batteries Inc. (publication date not stated) | AGM batteries: every three months. Conventional batteries: at least monthly. | Recharge AGM or conventional batteries below 12.4 V. |
| VARTA Automotive Batteries (publication date not stated) | Every two months. | Charge at 12.5 V or less. |
These are examples from their respective manufacturers, not a shared standard. Follow the vehicle and battery guidance applicable to your setup; do not treat either threshold as a rule for every battery.

If the vehicle maker permits removal, keep the battery upright in a dry, ventilated, cool place, and keep it clean and fully charged. VARTA gives an annual average of 15 °C as an optimal storage temperature in its guidance; that figure is VARTA’s recommendation, not a universal ideal. Follow the battery maker’s instructions for your specific battery.
Battery chemistry changes what you can maintain
Do not open or top up an AGM battery. Yuasa says activated AGM batteries are permanently sealed. Some conventional, serviceable lead-acid batteries have different instructions that may call for checking electrolyte and adding distilled water when needed. Only do so if the battery maker’s instructions identify the battery as serviceable and explain the procedure; “maintenance-free” does not mean you should open or refill it.
Charge safely and know when to stop
Lead-acid batteries contain corrosive fluid and can release explosive hydrogen, particularly while charging. General Motors warns of acid burns and explosive gas; Aston Martin’s storage manual advises airflow and keeping smoking, sparks, and short circuits away. Wear eye protection, work in a ventilated area, and follow the charger instructions. Switch the charger off before connecting or disconnecting it if the instructions require it. Never charge a bulging or distorted battery, open a sealed AGM battery, or attach a 12-volt charger to a high-voltage traction battery. If the procedure is unfamiliar or the battery appears damaged, use a qualified workshop.
