To use a trickle charger safely, first confirm that its voltage and charging mode match your car battery, then follow both the charger and vehicle manuals for connection points and charging steps. Make or break the battery connections with AC power removed or the charger in its specified standby state, work in a ventilated area, and do not charge a damaged or frozen battery.
Before connecting a charger
Check the battery and vehicle requirements
Read the car’s owner’s manual and the charger’s manual. Confirm the battery’s nominal voltage and chemistry, that the charger supports them, and any capacity range the charger specifies. A charger’s advertised chemistry support alone does not show that its charging profile is suitable for your car’s electrical system. NOCO’s charging precautions explain checking voltage and charger suitability; vehicle-specific charging directions take precedence.
Do not assume every car has the same grounding arrangement or permits the same charging procedure with the battery installed. The vehicle maker may specify a remote positive post or chassis ground point. For example, Kia’s 2025 owner’s manual battery guidance applies to the stated Kia model-year context, not to all cars.
Inspect the battery, charger, and leads
Do not charge a battery that is damaged or frozen. Check cables and clamps for damage, including cracked insulation, and follow the charger manual’s inspection instructions. If a flooded battery is serviceable, follow its maker’s instructions for checking electrolyte and adding distilled water; do not open a sealed battery. Set up a safe charging area
Charge where air can circulate. Batteries can release hydrogen during charging, and that gas can ignite; Chevrolet’s battery-care guidance discusses the hazard. Avoid smoking, flames, and sparks near the battery. CTEK’s PRO25S North American manual says, “Do not operate the charger in a closed-in area or restrict ventilation in any way.” That instruction is from that charger’s manual, not a universal substitute for the instructions supplied with your device: PRO25S North American Manual.
Keep the charger uncovered and positioned as its manual directs, away from the battery where specified. Route leads clear of sharp edges, hot surfaces, moving belts and fans, and places where the hood or a door could pinch them.

Connect and charge in the right order
- Remove AC power first. Unplug the charger, or use its exact standby procedure if its manual requires that instead. NOCO instructs users to connect and disconnect output cables with the charger in standby and the AC cord removed; CTEK’s M45 manual likewise says to disconnect power before handling battery leads.
- Attach the DC leads according to both manuals. Use the specified posts or remote connection points and the prescribed order. Check polarity before proceeding. Many negative-ground vehicles use the positive battery terminal and an approved chassis or engine ground away from the battery, but follow the car maker’s named point rather than treating that pattern as universal.
- Power the charger and select its mode. Once connections are checked, connect it to AC and choose the correct battery mode if selection is required. Follow the device’s indicators and manual. Stop if it reports a fault, the battery heats abnormally, or another warning appears; do not improvise troubleshooting.
- Disconnect in the prescribed order. When charging is finished, unplug the charger or put it in the specified standby state before removing the DC leads. Follow the charger and vehicle manuals; some instructions for an installed battery require removing the chassis connection first.
Know what “trickle charger” means for your device
“Trickle charger” is used for products with different controls and charging behavior. Some chargers automatically move to a maintenance stage, but the label alone does not establish that a unit will stop charging safely or can stay connected indefinitely. Check your device’s status indicators and manual, especially for long-term storage use. Chevrolet mentions trickle charging in its extended-storage battery-care guidance, but that does not override the instructions for a particular charger or car.
If you are choosing a device for this job, look for a 12V smart battery charger/maintainer only when 12V is confirmed for your vehicle and the charger supports the battery chemistry, capacity, and vehicle instructions. Battery Tender lists one example with selectable chemistry modes, but that listing is a product specification, not a universal recommendation: 12V charger and maintainer product page. A compatible ring-terminal quick-disconnect harness can make repeat connections more convenient; it is optional, and compatibility must be checked.
