AI reply suggestions do not all see the same information or process it in the same place. Gmail features use email context, while Google Messages Magic Compose and Google’s developer Smart Reply API use defined windows of recent messages and are documented as running on-device. A separate Gemini search feature in Google Messages has a different data flow. The details depend on the feature, so “AI replies” does not have one universal privacy answer.
What counts as an AI reply suggestion?
The label covers several features with different jobs. Gmail Smart Reply offers short phrases; Gmail Gemini Suggested Replies can draft a longer, more personalized response. Google Messages Magic Compose generates a reply or rewrites a draft. Google also offers an on-device Smart Reply API for developers building casual conversation apps. Google Messages Gemini suggestions are another separate feature, with a distinct search interaction.

What can reply suggestions see?
Gmail Smart Reply: the email or chain
Google describes Smart Reply as using the context of the email or email chain. That is more specific than saying it reads every message in your Gmail account, but it does mean the reply is informed by the email context rather than only by a fixed list of generic phrases. The feature may not appear for every message.
Gmail Gemini Suggested Replies: email details and possibly your style
Gemini Suggested Replies can draw on details in the received email—for example, a flight time or booking code. Google also documents matching the tone and style of past written emails for personalized replies. That is a broader kind of personalization than Smart Reply’s short stock-like phrases. The source list for a suggestion can be viewed, but not edited by the user.

Magic Compose: a limited recent-message window or one draft
For a suggested response, Magic Compose uses the 20 previous messages as context. Its rewrite function uses the draft being rewritten. Google says messages containing attachments, voice messages, or images are not used to generate suggestions; image captions and voice transcriptions may be used. This describes the documented Magic Compose inputs, not every feature in Google Messages.
ML Kit: up to 10 recent messages
The developer API uses up to 10 recent messages, and Google’s documentation says it only returns suggestions when it identifies English. It also filters detected sensitive topics. These constraints define the API’s documented behavior; they should not be treated as a promise that every app using it will produce suitable replies in every conversation.

Does using a suggestion send messages to Google?
Input scope and processing location are separate questions. Google explicitly documents on-device processing for Magic Compose and the ML Kit Smart Reply API. For Magic Compose, Google states: “Google doesn’t store messages or use them to train machine learning models.” The claim is specific to Magic Compose; it should not be extended to Gmail or all Google reply features.
For Gmail Smart Reply and Gmail Gemini Suggested Replies, the cited help documentation describes the email context used but does not provide the same blanket statement that processing happens on-device. That distinction matters: the available documentation supports neither assuming that Gmail uses Magic Compose’s on-device model nor asserting a broader data-transfer claim beyond what Google’s pages say.

Google Messages Gemini suggestions have a separate, explicit action: tapping a suggestion to search sends the search term to Gemini, according to Google. If “Use screen context” is enabled, Gemini can read what’s on the screen. This is not the same interaction as Magic Compose generating a reply on-device.

Google’s historical Smart Reply research describes a multi-stage design, not simple phrase matching. A recurrent neural network predicted likely responses; a set of responses was generated offline; semantic diversity helped offer alternatives with different intents; and a trigger model decided whether to show a suggestion at all. This is useful background on the original Gmail-era system, but it does not establish that current Gmail or Gemini features use that exact architecture.

Gmail Smart Reply
Smart Reply is optional and requires Gmail smart features to be enabled. Google’s cited Help page lists English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. Basic Smart Reply does not require a paid plan according to the cited documentation. Gmail Help
Gmail Gemini Suggested Replies
Availability depends on account or plan eligibility, enabled Workspace smart features, and English as the account language under Google’s cited Help page. Personalized replies have separate account and plan conditions, and eligibility does not guarantee that a suggestion will appear for every email. These conditions apply to the Gemini feature, not basic Gmail Smart Reply. Gmail Help

Google’s documentation describes the rewrite feature as limited to adults using English on Android phones with AICore and a signed-in Google account; availability is limited. The documented conditions are specific to that rewrite capability and should not be read as a universal requirement for all reply suggestions. Google Messages Help
When should you review a suggested reply?
Every feature here produces text for a person to consider, not a guarantee that a reply is accurate or appropriate. A suggestion can misunderstand context or imply a commitment you do not intend to make. Read it before sending, especially when it includes sensitive information, makes a promise, or concerns professional advice. Gmail lets you edit selected Smart Reply text; Google also provides feedback options for Gemini Suggested Replies. ML Kit cautions developers that suggestions may not fit every context or audience.
