1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a router for your apartment’s layout, devices, and actual connection problem—not its advertised top speed alone. For most homes, automatic channel selection and a good central router location are sensible starting points. Consider Wi-Fi 6E if your important devices support 6 GHz and usually operate near the router; it adds another band, but it is not a guaranteed fix for weak coverage or neighboring-network congestion.
What matters most in an apartment building
Nearby Wi-Fi networks can compete for radio airtime, but buying a router with a bigger headline speed does not by itself solve congestion. Your results also depend on the router’s position, walls and other obstacles, neighboring network activity, your internet service, and whether your devices support the router’s Wi-Fi features.
Start by identifying the problem: is a device slow even near the router, or does the connection weaken in a particular room? A coverage gap and crowded radio channels are different issues, so a new router, extra mesh point, or manual channel change may not address the same cause.
Choose bands and Wi-Fi generation around your devices
Dual-band Wi-Fi 6
A dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router is a reasonable compatibility-oriented baseline if you do not need 6 GHz. Check that it supports the Wi-Fi generations used by your devices and has the wired capabilities required by your broadband service.

Wi-Fi 6E and the 6 GHz band
Wi-Fi 6E can provide access to 6 GHz, but both the router and the client device must support it; many older devices do not. Microsoft notes that 6 GHz can provide the best performance close to the router, while Cisco’s deployment guide explains that its shorter wavelengths mean shorter range than 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz. Treat it as an additional option for compatible nearby devices, not a promise of better apartment-wide coverage.
Do not buy on aggregate speed alone
Advertised combined or aggregate speed is not a prediction of the speed a single device will achieve. Compare models by total price, client compatibility, your apartment’s layout, available bands and channel settings, wired ports, and how easily you can manage the settings you need.

Set channel behavior for a crowded environment
Automatic channel selection is a practical default when the router offers it. Apple recommends using Auto where available and says: “If your router doesn’t support automatic channel selection, choose whichever channel performs best in your network environment.” Local conditions change as nearby networks become more or less active, so a manually selected channel that works at one time may not be best later.
- 2.4 GHz: Set channel width to 20 MHz. Apple recommends this setting.
- 5 GHz and 6 GHz: Use Auto or all available channel widths, as Apple recommends.
- Manual channel choice: If Auto is unavailable or does not address a problem, test performance on your own network rather than assuming one channel is always best.
Wider channels can offer higher speeds, but Apple cautions that they are more susceptible to interference and more likely to interfere with other devices. In a building with many nearby networks, a wider setting is therefore not automatically an improvement.

- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Place the router where it can serve the apartment
Put the main router in a central, open, elevated position where practical, ideally near the broadband handoff. Google recommends a central, eye-level location for its Wi-Fi equipment. If the broadband connection enters at one edge of the apartment, choose the best feasible open position near that handoff rather than hiding the router behind furniture or in a closed cabinet. Walls, other obstacles, and nearby radio-emitting devices can affect results.
Use this setup and troubleshooting sequence
- Position the router: Choose a central, elevated, open location in the apartment where the broadband connection allows.
- Leave channel selection on Auto: Use automatic selection if your router supports it; newer equipment may select a less crowded channel automatically.
- Set channel widths: Use 20 MHz for 2.4 GHz and Auto or all available widths for 5 GHz and 6 GHz.
- Match devices to bands: Connect compatible, high-demand devices that are near the router to 6 GHz when your router and client allow it; keep older or more distant devices on bands they support.
- Check the rooms and times that matter: Test where and when the slowdown occurs. If the signal remains weak in a particular room, reconsider obstacles and router placement before adding equipment.
When to consider mesh or an extender
Consider mesh or an extender after you have identified a coverage gap and tried a better router location. Additional points need sensible placement and, depending on the design, a suitable wireless or wired link. There is no universal distance or apartment size at which mesh becomes the better choice; the layout and the connection between the points matter.

- Which Wi-Fi generations and bands your important devices support, especially whether they support 6 GHz.
- Whether the router’s wired ports and capabilities meet your broadband service’s requirements.
- Whether its channel settings include automatic selection and width controls.
- Whether your main devices will be close enough to benefit from 6 GHz.
- Whether your problem is coverage in a particular room or performance across the apartment.
Availability of 6 GHz and the practical choices for your network can depend on regional rules, router firmware, client support, building materials, and local radio conditions. No router feature guarantees that a crowded building’s interference will disappear.
