Gboard and Microsoft SwiftKey are the two strongest alternatives to Samsung Keyboard for most Galaxy owners to compare. Gboard offers glide typing, voice input, and handwriting for supported languages; SwiftKey focuses on correction, next-word prediction, and swipe typing. Neither option is proven faster or more accurate in an independent comparison here, so choose by the features, languages, and privacy controls that fit how you type.

Which keyboard should you choose?

Keyboard What it offers Best fit
Gboard Google documents glide typing, text correction, voice typing, language layouts, and handwriting for supported languages. Google’s Gboard setup and feature instructions explain how to enable features and add languages. Consider it if you want to switch among tapping, swiping, voice input, or handwriting where available.
Microsoft SwiftKey Microsoft documents text correction, next-word prediction, and Flow swipe typing, along with settings to adjust typing behavior. See Microsoft’s SwiftKey guide. Consider it if you want prediction and correction controls alongside swipe typing.
Samsung Keyboard It is the built-in baseline. Samsung’s Galaxy keyboard guidance covers settings and changing the default; the Galaxy Store description lists options such as keyboard size and number or alternative characters. Keep it if its layout and Galaxy-specific controls already suit you.

These descriptions are feature comparisons, not a performance ranking. The cited vendor information does not establish which keyboard is faster, more accurate, or more satisfying for users overall.

Choose based on how you type

Input method

If you often swipe between letters, both Gboard and SwiftKey document swipe-style typing: Gboard calls it glide typing, while SwiftKey calls its feature Flow. Gboard also documents voice typing and handwriting for supported languages. Check that the input methods you want are available for your language and device.

Correction and prediction

Think about whether you want autocorrection, next-word suggestions, or more control over typing behavior. SwiftKey documents correction and prediction settings; Gboard includes text correction options. Try the relevant controls rather than assuming that a feature name guarantees the same behavior across keyboards.

Galaxy-specific controls

If you rely on options such as keyboard sizing, layout adjustments, or device-specific features, compare them on your exact Galaxy model. Samsung says menu locations and available controls vary by device, software version, and carrier; an alternative keyboard may not reproduce every Samsung Keyboard capability.

Privacy settings to check

Keyboard privacy descriptions below come from the vendors themselves, not an independent audit. Review the current in-app controls and policies before deciding, because features and policies can change.

  • Gboard: Google says Gboard does not send typed text to Google apart from searches or saved words. Google says searches and usage statistics are sent, and voice input is sent for transcription. It also documents optional audio donation and learning settings. Details are in Google’s Gboard privacy information.
  • SwiftKey: Microsoft says personal and language data stays on-device unless you opt into an account and cloud services. Backup and sync, as well as product-improvement sharing, have settings users can change. See Microsoft’s SwiftKey privacy information.

How to install and switch keyboards on a Galaxy phone

  1. Install the keyboard. Get Gboard or Microsoft SwiftKey from your phone’s app store.
  2. Enable and configure it. Open the keyboard app and follow its setup prompts. In Gboard, use its settings to choose options such as glide typing, text correction, and voice typing, and add the languages and layouts you need. Google’s Gboard instructions describe these controls.
  3. Set it as the default. Open your Galaxy’s keyboard settings and select the default keyboard. Samsung documents the process in its Galaxy keyboard guidance. If the path differs, search Settings for “keyboard” or look under General management and keyboard controls; the precise menu depends on the phone, software version, and carrier.
  4. Review permissions and privacy controls. Read the system prompt when enabling a third-party keyboard, then check that keyboard’s own settings for learning, account, cloud, and voice options. Microsoft says Android displays a warning when any third-party keyboard is enabled; that explanation is Microsoft’s, not an independent security certification.

If you meant a physical keyboard

A Bluetooth keyboard is a different choice from an on-screen keyboard app. It can suit tactile or longer-form typing, but compatibility depends on the phone, operating-system version, and the keyboard’s connection method. Check those details for the specific product before buying; the evidence here does not establish universal compatibility for any particular model.
