For a functional 3D-printed desk tool that will be handled every day, PETG is the best-supported starting point in the available manufacturer guidance. It is commonly used for holders and clamps and is described as tough, durable, and strongly layer-adhering. Choose PLA instead for detailed, low-load accessories where easy printing and appearance matter more than mechanical stress or heat resistance.
Choose filament for the tool’s load, not just how often you touch it
“Daily use” describes handling frequency, not a defined load. A pen cup, cable clip, phone stand, and small lever or clamp experience different forces. Match the material and design to the part’s actual job: repeated handling alone does not establish how long a print will last.
- Low-load and appearance-led: PLA is reasonable for a decorative organizer or other accessory that will not be mechanically stressed or exposed to significant heat.
- Functional holder or clamp: PETG is the more strongly supported default among the materials covered here.
- Technical requirements: Consider ABS, ASA, or nylon only when their properties are needed and your printer and print environment can support them.

Why PETG is a practical default for functional desk parts
Prusa identifies mechanical parts, holders, and clamps as common PETG uses, and describes the material as tough, durable, and strongly layer-adhering. That makes it a sensible first choice for a desk tool expected to take routine handling or moderate stress. It is a material-selection recommendation, not a promise that a particular print will survive a specified number of uses.
The tradeoff is that PETG may string, and it can produce less-fine detail or bridging than PLA. If the part is chiefly decorative or needs crisp detail rather than load-bearing function, PLA may be the simpler fit.

Check the printer and environment before choosing a technical filament
Material choice affects more than the finished part. Bed requirements, enclosure needs, nozzle compatibility, and filament drying can all affect whether a material is practical on a given printer. Consult the manufacturer’s material guide and the exact filament’s print profile rather than assuming one manufacturer’s settings apply to every machine or blend.
For one specific product, Prusament PETG’s product page lists manufacturer settings of 250 ±10 °C for the nozzle and 80 ±10 °C for the heatbed. Those are product-specific settings, not universal PETG temperatures. Prusament PETG product page.

ABS is more susceptible to layer separation in cold drafts, and Prusa recommends printing it in an enclosure. ASA also depends on a stable environment. These requirements can make either less convenient than PETG for a routine desk accessory.
Design and printing still determine whether the tool works
Filament alone does not determine strength. Design the part around the real force it will experience, and, where feasible, orient layers in relation to the likely force. Use the filament manufacturer’s printer profile. The guidance available here does not quantify a universal strength improvement from a particular layer orientation or infill percentage, so avoid treating any one setting as a guaranteed fix.

There is no established comparative lifetime ranking for PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, or nylon desk tools under daily use. The cited guidance supports qualitative material choices, not cycle counts or expected years of service.

Do not assume a printed cup or dish is food safe because it is made from a particular filament. Prusa warns that grooves between printed layers can harbor bacteria and does not recommend filament prints for direct food-contact dishes without appropriate sealing and clean, stainless-steel nozzle conditions. This does not affect the choice of material for ordinary organizers or tool holders.
