What is the difference between an AI symptom checker and a doctor?
The key difference is not simply that one is software and the other is human. It is the kind of task being done, the information available, and what happens if the answer is wrong.
| What matters | AI symptom checker or chatbot | Doctor or other health professional |
|---|---|---|
| Typical role | Can explain general health information, help you sort symptoms into a clear account, or suggest questions to raise at an appointment. A symptom checker may also offer triage or possible causes, depending on its design. Harvard Health discusses educational and appointment-preparation uses. | Can assess a person’s situation, decide what further evaluation is needed, and discuss diagnosis or treatment options. |
| Information available | Usually depends on what you enter and on the system’s design. It may not have your complete medical history, examination findings, or other relevant clinical information. | Can take a history, ask follow-up questions, perform an examination when appropriate, and consider available clinical information. Harvard Health explains why individual decisions can depend on history, examination, and clinical judgment. |
| Human review | Some tools may be used with professional oversight; others are public-facing systems that return an answer directly. Check how the particular service works. | A qualified professional can question or clarify what you report and apply professional judgment. NHS England says care decisions should be made with the patient or service user, using professional judgment. NHS England guidance |
| Risk if wrong | A mistaken answer could cause unnecessary worry, false reassurance, or delay in seeking appropriate care. The implications depend on the question and how the tool is intended to be used. | A clinician can weigh the potential consequences of missing a serious condition and decide whether further assessment or care is warranted. |
“AI symptom checker” covers different products and functions. A general chatbot that explains a health term is not the same thing as software intended to triage a patient or support a clinical decision. Do not assume that every product has the same capabilities, evidence, or regulatory status.
What can AI help with?
For low-stakes preparation, a chatbot can help turn a scattered account into a clearer list: what changed, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you want to ask. It can also explain general health topics or help make sense of a doctor’s notes, as described by Harvard Health.

For new symptoms, Harvard clinician reviewer Adam Rodman, MD, MPH, FACP, describes chatbot exploration as a first step before speaking with a health professional—not a substitute for that conversation. The practical value is helping you prepare to communicate, rather than establishing what condition you have.
- Use it to draft a concise symptom timeline or questions for an appointment.
- Ask it to explain a general term in plain language, then check important information with a clinician or reliable health source.
- Treat a list of possible causes as possibilities to discuss, not as a confirmed diagnosis.
What can’t AI reliably do for an individual?
A chatbot’s response is based on the information and function available to it. It cannot be assumed to have the context a clinician may gather by asking follow-up questions, reviewing medical history, examining you, or considering other clinical information. Those factors can change which explanations or next steps are appropriate.
Harvard Health advises against relying on AI answers to make individual treatment or management decisions. A system that sounds confident is not necessarily correct, and a plausible explanation does not show that it has ruled out other causes.

For urgent concerns, follow local emergency guidance or contact an appropriate health professional; no single checklist here can determine urgency for every person or location.

A historical audit published in the British Medical Journal evaluated 23 symptom checkers and found deficits in both diagnosis and triage. The NHS Medicines Resources summary says triage advice generally leaned toward seeking care, including in situations where self-care could be reasonable. Read the NHS Medicines Resources summary.
That audit is evidence about the tools evaluated at that time, not a current performance score for every symptom checker or general chatbot. It does not establish that all present-day AI tools perform worse than doctors, nor does it provide a current head-to-head comparison of named consumer products and clinicians.

Accuracy alone is also an incomplete measure. A tool’s ability to name a likely condition does not, by itself, establish whether using it improves patient outcomes or changes healthcare service use. Those are separate questions from whether a particular answer was correct.
Does an AI symptom checker have to be FDA-approved?
There is no sound blanket answer for all products. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration’s guidance explains a particular non-device clinical decision support criterion aimed at recommendations to health care professionals; patient-facing functions do not meet that criterion. Software’s regulatory treatment depends on its function and intended use, so that guidance should not be read as saying every consumer symptom checker is either FDA-approved or unregulated. See the FDA’s clinical decision support guidance and its discussion of AI uses in medical practice.
Regulatory status is not a substitute for checking what a product is designed to do, what evidence supports that use, or whether a clinician reviews its output. A general-purpose chatbot and a purpose-built clinical tool may be governed differently.

What about privacy and bias?
Privacy practices vary by product. Before entering health information, read the specific service’s privacy notice and consider whether you are comfortable with its data practices. Avoid putting your name, address, date of birth, or other identifying details into a public AI tool when they are not needed for your question.
Bias and unreliable output are also product-specific concerns. NHS England notes that false or inconsistent outputs may point to bias or inaccurate training data, and says AI can support clinical decision-making while final care decisions should be made with the patient or service user and professional judgment. Its guidance is for health and care professionals in England, not a guarantee about every consumer product.
For medicines-related decisions, UK Medicines Information’s December 2025 position statement advises against routine or independent use of public large language models and says patient-identifiable information must not be entered into AI systems. That is UK professional guidance with a specific scope, not a universal rule for every jurisdiction or every consumer tool. Read the UKMI position statement.
Quick Recap
How should you use a symptom checker before an appointment?
- Write down what you know first. Note when the problem began, how it has changed, and the details you think a clinician should know. Keep your own account as the source of truth.
- Use the tool for a bounded task. Ask for help organizing your notes, explaining a general term, or drafting questions—not for a definitive diagnosis or personalized treatment plan.
- Check the product’s purpose and privacy terms. Find out whether it is educational, a symptom checker, a triage service, or a clinician-facing decision-support tool, and review how it handles information.
- Bring the useful questions to a health professional. Share your symptoms and concerns directly. Do not treat the tool’s result as a reason to ignore symptoms or postpone care that you need.
