Start by uninstalling apps and games you no longer use. If that is not enough, connect a USB drive and set it up as device storage to make room for app and game installs. That setup formats and encrypts the drive, so back up its contents first. A USB drive left as removable storage can hold files, but not apps or app data.
Check storage and remove unused apps
Open the storage screen and review what is taking up space. NVIDIA’s newer guide lists Settings > Device Preferences > Storage; older SHIELD TV software may instead show Settings > Device > Storage & reset. Menu labels vary by model and software version, so use the closest matching path on your device.
If you have apps or games you no longer need, uninstall them. On the older interface, open Settings, select Apps under Device, choose a downloaded app, select Uninstall, and confirm. Remove only apps you are willing to reinstall; do not assume that uninstalling preserves locally stored app data. NVIDIA recommends uninstalling apps or games as its first response to a full-storage warning (NVIDIA troubleshooting guide).
Choose the right kind of extra storage
The important distinction is whether you need space for installed apps and games or room for media files. NVIDIA states that “Apps and app data cannot be installed on ‘removable storage’” in its SHIELD TV user guide.

| What you need | Storage option | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Space for apps and games | USB drive set up as device or internal storage | SHIELD formats and encrypts the drive; back up its contents before setup. |
| Files you want to move between SHIELD and other devices | USB drive left as removable storage | Suitable for files, but not app or app-data installation. |
| Extra storage on a compatible SHIELD TV Pro | MicroSD card, if the specific model has a card slot | Check model compatibility; NVIDIA recommends Class 10 or faster for its documented setup. |
| Shared personal media on a home network | NAS or other network storage | Provides access to shared media, not local app-install capacity. |
Use a USB drive for app and game storage
- Back up any files on the USB drive that you want to keep. Setting it up as device storage formats and encrypts it for SHIELD, so it will no longer be an ordinary interchangeable drive for a PC or camera.
- Connect the drive to SHIELD and open the storage screen. Depending on your software, use Settings > Device Preferences > Storage or Settings > Device > Storage & reset.
- Select the connected drive and choose Set up as device storage, or the equivalent internal/adopted storage option shown on older software.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. When setup finishes, the drive is configured for SHIELD device storage and can provide space for apps and games.
NVIDIA’s older storage guide describes a 16 GB internal-storage SHIELD TV and recommends an adopted drive larger than that model’s internal storage. That capacity guidance is specific to the model in that guide, not a universal minimum for every SHIELD TV (NVIDIA storage-increase guide).
Eject adopted external storage before unplugging it. NVIDIA warns that removing it without ejecting can cause applications to crash. On the older interface, the path is Settings > Storage & reset > Eject.

Keep a USB drive removable for media files
If you want to carry files between devices or play media without dedicating the drive to SHIELD, leave it as removable storage rather than setting it up as device storage. The current guide lists FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and HFS+ for the model it documents; supported formats can differ by SHIELD generation. NVIDIA’s older guide notes that FAT32 has a 4 GB single-file limit. Removable storage does not add app or app-data installation space.
Consider microSD or network storage where supported
MicroSD on compatible SHIELD TV Pro models
A microSD card is an option only on a SHIELD TV Pro model with a card slot. Verify that your exact device supports it before buying a card. For the setup documented in NVIDIA’s microSD guide, NVIDIA recommends a Class 10 speed rating or higher.

Network storage for a shared media library
You can configure discoverable or manually entered NAS storage for shared personal media using NVIDIA’s network-storage guide. A NAS makes files available over your home network; it does not expand SHIELD’s local storage for installing apps.

A factory reset is not a routine storage-cleanup step. NVIDIA says resetting SHIELD erases device data and settings, and apps must be installed again. Consider it only when addressing a separate device problem and after reviewing NVIDIA’s reset instructions.
