For a dedicated mini PC, the straightforward option is Home Assistant Operating System (HAOS), installed with the official generic x86-64 image. The computer needs to be 64-bit capable and able to boot with UEFI. Once HAOS is running, connect devices through the appropriate Home Assistant integration; Zigbee, Thread, and Z-Wave devices may also require a compatible USB radio or controller.
Check that the mini PC is suitable
The generic x86-64 installation is intended for an Intel- or AMD-based 64-bit PC that supports UEFI boot. Home Assistant’s developer documentation says the board configuration aims to support most UEFI-capable x86-64 systems and is primarily aimed at Intel NUC mini PCs and similar devices. Its tested-hardware list is useful evidence for the systems it names, not a guarantee for every mini PC. See the generic x86-64 hardware requirements.
- Check that the processor and firmware support 64-bit UEFI boot.
- Make sure the mini PC has storage you can dedicate to Home Assistant. Internal SATA, SSD, M.2, or eMMC storage is typical; the installation guide says external USB storage is possible but not recommended.
- Plan to use Ethernet for first boot, as shown in the installation guide. Network hardware support varies; the developer documentation lists supported NIC families and some Intel Wi-Fi cards, not every network adapter.
- Use firmware settings to enable UEFI and disable Secure Boot, as directed by the official installation guide.
Home Assistant does not establish a universal minimum CPU or RAM specification for this setup in the cited guidance. Verify the exact mini PC’s hardware and firmware rather than relying on a generic performance claim.
Choose an installation type
HAOS: best fit for a dedicated mini PC
Home Assistant says HAOS is the recommended installation type for most users. It packages Home Assistant Core, Supervisor, and apps, making it the appliance-like route for a computer dedicated to Home Assistant. The tradeoff is that installing it takes over the target drive rather than preserving the existing operating system. See the installation overview.

Container: for people already managing Linux and containers
Choose Home Assistant Container if you intend to run Home Assistant alongside other services and are comfortable maintaining the Linux host and container runtime. Home Assistant documents Docker Engine, not Docker Desktop, for this route. Container does not include apps, and some functions, including Thread and Z-Wave, are app-controlled, so plan for those needs before choosing it. The generic x86-64 guide links to Container instructions; those instructions cover host networking, device mappings, and Bluetooth access through D-Bus.
Install HAOS on the mini PC
- Back up the target drive. Writing HAOS erases the selected destination and removes its existing data and operating system. Confirm the destination carefully before proceeding.
- Get the current image and follow the official guide. Use the image linked from the generic x86-64 installation page rather than relying on a saved release link.
- Write HAOS to the target storage. The guide describes two approaches: boot a live Ubuntu USB environment and write HAOS to the mini PC’s internal disk, or use another computer and Balena Etcher to write the image to the boot medium. Its Ubuntu-assisted route calls for a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB.
- Boot the mini PC. If you used the Ubuntu method, remove the temporary flash drive after installation. Connect Ethernet and power on. The official guide says internet access is required at first start because Home Assistant downloads components.
- Open Home Assistant from another device. On a device on the same local network, open
http://homeassistant.local:8123in a browser and complete onboarding. If that name does not resolve, try the mini PC’s host name or IP address with port8123.
Connect devices using the right protocol
First identify how each device communicates, then choose the matching integration and any required radio or controller. The protocol alone does not guarantee that every model or feature is supported; check the integration and device-specific setup guidance. Home Assistant’s hardware FAQ and hardware catalog are useful starting points.

| Device connection | What the mini PC may need | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi or Ethernet | Usually no protocol-specific USB radio; add the suitable integration in Home Assistant. | Confirm that the device and its desired functions are supported by the integration. |
| Zigbee | A Zigbee coordinator: a hardware radio adapter, typically a USB dongle, attached to the Home Assistant host. | Home Assistant’s ZHA documentation explains coordinator setup. The hardware catalog lists Connect ZBT-2 for Zigbee and Thread. |
| Thread or Matter over Thread | A compatible Thread adapter; the cited third-party-adapter instructions also call for HAOS, current updates, and a USB extension cable. | Check the adapter’s firmware and baud-rate instructions. Home Assistant lists Connect ZBT-2 for Zigbee and Thread; see its Thread documentation. |
| Z-Wave | A compatible Z-Wave controller, such as the Connect ZWA-2 listed by Home Assistant. | Check the controller’s supported SDK and firmware guidance in the Z-Wave controller documentation. |
| Bluetooth | For Container installations, Bluetooth requires D-Bus access and suitable device configuration. Requirements depend on the installation route. | Follow the Container instructions linked from the generic x86-64 guide. |
| Vendor-cloud integration | Internet access and the vendor’s supported integration or service may be required. | Check whether the features you need depend on the vendor’s cloud service. |
Understand what works when the internet is down
Home Assistant says devices using local protocols can communicate without internet access. That is different from a device whose integration depends on a brand’s cloud service: it may become unreachable when the internet is down. Offline behavior is not a blanket guarantee that every device feature will work. Check the relevant integration and the manufacturer’s requirements; see Home Assistant’s FAQ on local and cloud connectivity.

Common setup problems to check
- The mini PC will not boot the installer: recheck that UEFI is enabled and Secure Boot is disabled, as directed by the generic x86-64 guide.
- The wrong operating system or drive was replaced: HAOS installation erases its selected target. Stop and verify the destination before writing; restore important files only from a backup.
- The setup page does not open: confirm that the mini PC has Ethernet and has completed its first boot, then try its host name or IP address with port 8123 if
homeassistant.localfails to resolve. - A Zigbee, Thread, or Z-Wave device is not discovered: confirm that the required coordinator or controller is connected and supported, and follow that integration’s setup instructions. Wi-Fi and Ethernet devices do not use these USB radios.
- Bluetooth or serial hardware is unavailable in Container: Container requires deliberate host and device configuration; Bluetooth needs D-Bus, and USB serial devices must be mapped into the container with appropriate permissions.
