On your SHIELD TV, open Settings > Device Preferences > About and note the model identifier and other device details shown. Older software may use Settings > Device > About. Then confirm the result against the SHIELD’s physical design and any packaging or purchase records you still have; a model number or remote alone may not identify the generation conclusively.
Find the model details in Settings
- From the SHIELD home screen, open Settings > Device Preferences > About.
- If you do not see Device Preferences, try Settings > Device > About. NVIDIA’s older guide uses the latter path; current SHIELD TV guides use the former.
- Record the model identifier, device name, serial number, and software or build information that appears. The precise fields can vary with software version. Keep the serial number private unless you need to provide it to NVIDIA Support.

Confirm the result with the SHIELD itself
Use more than one clue before deciding which edition you have. Compare the identifier and device name from About with the unit’s shape, ports, storage or configuration clues, and any Pro marking. Original packaging and purchase records can provide another check.
NVIDIA’s product materials distinguish SHIELD TV (2015), SHIELD TV (2017), and SHIELD TV Pro (2017, 500GB), among other editions. Its developer OS images page names the 2015 16GB, 2017 16GB, and 2017 Pro 500GB editions. NVIDIA’s previous-generation products listing also lists different remotes and a SHIELD stand as accessories.

Why a model number or remote may not settle it
NVIDIA material includes identifiers such as P2897 and P3430, but its consulted support pages do not provide a complete cross-reference mapping every identifier to a specific generation and retail configuration. Treat an identification based on a single number as provisional unless the device’s other details corroborate it.
A remote is supporting evidence, not proof of the TV model: remotes have been sold separately and can be replaced. Identify the SHIELD unit, rather than relying on the accessory that happens to be paired with it.

If the clues conflict
If the About screen, physical details, and paperwork do not agree, avoid guessing from an incomplete model-number list. Contact NVIDIA Support with the device’s serial number to help establish which guide or edition applies. NVIDIA’s support portal includes guides for different SHIELD generations, including a 2015 user guide and a 2019 troubleshooting guide.
