Start by checking the exact alert name: an Irregular Rhythm Notification or ECG result calls for a different response from Loss of Pulse Detection, Breathing Emergency Detection, or Fall Detection. A Pixel Watch can flag something to follow up, but it cannot diagnose a condition or detect every event. If someone appears acutely unwell, is unconscious, or needs urgent help, contact local emergency services directly rather than waiting for the watch to act.

First, identify what the watch reported

Pixel Watch health features do different jobs. Some flag a possible rhythm issue for later review; others check whether you respond and may attempt an emergency call. Read the alert’s exact name and details before deciding what to do.

Alert What it does What to do
Irregular Rhythm Notification Analyzes pulse and motion data collected while you are still or sleeping. The analysis occurs after data syncs with Google Health; it is not real-time. Contact a doctor and share the alert and its time or details.
ECG result Assesses a 30-second recording of electrical heart signals for signs of AFib. Use the result as information to discuss with a doctor, not as a diagnosis.
Loss of Pulse Detection Checks in if the watch detects no pulse; if you do not respond, it starts an audible countdown and attempts an emergency call. If you need urgent help, contact emergency services directly. Do not rely on the watch alone.
Breathing Emergency Detection Uses heart-rate and motion sensors; it may check in, start a countdown, and attempt an emergency call if you do not respond. Treat a check-in as a prompt to respond, not as a diagnosis. Seek urgent help directly if someone appears seriously unwell.
Fall Detection After a detected hard fall, it waits about 30 seconds before prompting. Without a response, it alarms and calls emergency services after 60 seconds. Respond to the prompt if able. For urgent help, do not wait for the watch to call.

Google says these features may not detect every event, and emergency calls are subject to device, region, connection, and network conditions. See Google’s Pixel Watch health feature guidance for current availability.

If you received an Irregular Rhythm Notification

Google says this notification means its analysis found signs of an irregular rhythm that may be AFib in the preceding 24 hours, assuming regular syncing. Google recommends talking to a doctor. The American Heart Association similarly advises people to tell a healthcare professional about an abnormal wearable rhythm alert; see its wearable-device guidance.

  • Save or note the alert and when it appeared, and share those details with your clinician.
  • Do not change medication based on a watch alert without first speaking with a doctor.
  • Do not treat a missing alert as proof that AFib is absent. Google says the feature does not identify every episode and is not intended for people already diagnosed with AFib or as a monitoring tool for known AFib.

Google describes a validation study involving 455,699 subjects, but the help page does not state the study year. In a selected group of 1,057 people who returned a seven-day ECG patch with usable data, 340 (32.2%) had AFib. That selected study result is not an individual’s probability of having AFib or a guarantee of how the feature will perform for you. See Google’s Irregular Rhythm Notifications guidance and study description.

What an ECG result can—and cannot—tell you

The Google ECG app records electrical heart signals for 30 seconds and assesses signs of AFib. Google says the watch assessment is qualitatively similar to a Lead I ECG; a clinical 12-lead ECG provides information from 12 angles. Only a doctor can diagnose AFib, and the watch ECG cannot detect all heart conditions. Its result can inform a conversation with a doctor, not replace one.

When an alert attempts to contact emergency services

Loss of Pulse Detection

Google says Loss of Pulse Detection is available on Pixel Watch 3 and later in listed countries. If the watch does not detect a pulse, it checks in; if there is no response, it starts an audible countdown and attempts to call emergency services. If the call connects, an automated message gives location and reports that the watch detected no pulse and received no response.

The feature can miss a loss-of-pulse event, and a poor sensor reading during ordinary activity can also trigger a check-in. Calling depends on connectivity: a Wi-Fi model needs a nearby phone connected over Bluetooth; an LTE model needs an active LTE connection, and some regions require a carrier or Safety Signal. Google says this feature is not intended for people under 22 or people identified by healthcare professionals as being at high risk for sudden cardiac death. It does not replace real-time or continuous monitoring prescribed by a healthcare professional. See Google’s Loss of Pulse Detection guidance.

Breathing Emergency Detection

This feature uses heart-rate and motion sensors and may check in, then start an audible countdown and attempt an emergency call if you do not respond. The call requires a mobile network and is not guaranteed to connect. Availability is limited to select regions, and the feature is temporarily suspended when you travel to an unsupported region.

Google says it is not designed to detect apnea and is not a substitute for prescribed real-time oxygen monitoring. A check-in can happen during normal activity if the pulse-sensor reading is poor; movement, ambient light, individual variation, and pressure on the skin can affect signal quality. A check-in is not a diagnosis or a determination that medical care is needed. See Google’s Breathing Emergency Detection guidance.

Fall Detection

After a hard fall is detected, the watch waits about 30 seconds before prompting you. If there is no response, it alarms and calls emergency services after 60 seconds. Fall Detection may not detect every fall. A Wi-Fi model needs a nearby phone connected over Bluetooth to make an emergency call; an LTE model needs an active LTE connection. Regional availability and other conditions apply. See Google’s Pixel Watch emergency-feature guidance.

When not to rely on the watch

  • If someone is unconscious, appears acutely unwell, or needs urgent help, contact local emergency services directly. Do not wait for a watch alert or an attempted call.
  • A normal result or a quiet watch does not rule out a problem. Google says Irregular Rhythm Notifications do not catch every episode, and emergency features may not detect every event or connect.
  • Do not use a watch result to diagnose yourself, replace clinician-prescribed monitoring, or change medication.
  • For a non-emergency alert or uncertainty about what it means for you, contact a healthcare professional.

Check whether your model and connection support the feature

Feature availability varies by model, country, app, and safety-feature implementation. Google’s Health Guardian overview lists Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 for Google Health app Health Guardian features; in that overview, Breathing Emergency Detection is limited to the EU on Pixel Watch 4 and 5. This is not a universal availability guarantee. For current eligibility and setup, consult the relevant Google health-feature guidance and the feature-specific pages linked above.

Before relying on an emergency feature, check its settings and connection requirements for your model and location. Wi-Fi and LTE models do not have identical calling requirements, and some features require the phone to be nearby or an active mobile connection. Keep in mind that even a correctly configured feature cannot guarantee a call will connect.
