What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single Wi-Fi setting that makes every laptop faster. Measure the connection first, then change one setting at a time: try 5 GHz when you are near the router, use 2.4 GHz when range or walls are the problem, and investigate power saving or drivers if the connection drops. Advanced adapter settings are model-specific, so change them only when the manufacturer documents the option and you can compare the result.
Start by finding the bottleneck
A slow speed test can reflect weak Wi-Fi coverage, local wireless congestion, a laptop adapter or driver issue, a router problem, or the internet connection itself. Changing a laptop setting will not fix every one of those causes.
- Run a speed test where you normally use the laptop. Microsoft recommends establishing a baseline before changing a Wi-Fi network or its setup: Wi-Fi and your home layout.
- Repeat the test in another location, such as near the router, and compare results. A sharp improvement nearby points toward coverage or obstacles; little change suggests the cause may lie elsewhere.
- Test another device on the same network in the same place. If it is also slow, focus on the router, internet service, or local conditions rather than assuming the laptop is at fault.
- Change only one setting, then repeat the same test under similar conditions. Keep a note of the original value so you can restore it if the result is worse.
These comparisons help separate Wi-Fi performance from your internet plan or an ISP outage. They do not guarantee a particular speed increase from any setting.
Should you use 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, or 6 GHz?
The best band depends on distance, walls, interference, and whether both the laptop and router support it. If the router broadcasts separate network names (SSIDs), you can connect to each one and compare them in your usual location. With a shared name, Windows can select an available band automatically.

| Band | What it tends to suit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Longer range and better passage through obstacles | Nearby networks can congest this band. Try it when the laptop is far from the access point or separated by walls. |
| 5 GHz | More throughput potential and channels, typically over a shorter range than 2.4 GHz | Try it when the laptop is close enough to maintain a strong signal. Distance and obstructions can reduce its advantage. |
| 6 GHz | A high-performance option when the laptop is nearby | Requires a compatible laptop and router or access point; it may have shorter range than lower bands. |
Microsoft describes the trade-offs among Wi-Fi bands and compatibility in Faster and more secure Wi-Fi in Windows. A manual band preference is not automatically faster: signal strength, congestion, router configuration, and client support all matter.
For recurring drops, test power management
Power-saving settings are worth investigating when Wi-Fi disconnects repeatedly, not as a guaranteed speed boost. In Windows, the adapter’s power option may be available here:

- Expand Network adapters, right-click the Wi-Fi adapter, and choose Properties.
- On the Power Management tab, temporarily clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, if the option appears.
- Retest the connection on the same kind of workload. If drops do not improve, restore the original setting.
Microsoft also describes setting the wireless adapter power mode to Maximum Performance in Windows power settings as a troubleshooting step. Menu names and availability vary by Windows build, adapter, and driver; higher performance can use more battery. See Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.
Which advanced adapter settings should you change?
Windows may expose driver-specific options under Device Manager > Network adapters > [your Wi-Fi adapter] > Properties > Advanced. The available controls and their meanings depend on the adapter and driver, so there is no universal set of ideal values.

Intel’s recommendations for its adapter families provide examples, not rules for every laptop. For listed 802.11ax adapters, Intel recommends Auto for 5 GHz channel width, Medium for roaming aggressiveness, and highest transmit power; its recommendations also include disabling Throughput Booster and using 802.11ax mode where supported. Intel gives similar Auto 5 GHz width, Medium roaming aggressiveness, and highest transmit power guidance for listed 802.11ac adapters. See Intel’s 802.11ax settings and 802.11ac settings.
Intel’s advanced adapter settings guide says preferred band can depend on local interference and advises returning roaming aggressiveness to Medium if experiments do not improve the connection. Do not force a Wi-Fi mode, set roaming to maximum, or change registry values based on generic advice. Consult the laptop or adapter maker’s documentation, change one value at a time, and restore defaults if repeated tests show no benefit.

Check driver and hardware compatibility
A laptop cannot use a band or Wi-Fi generation its adapter does not support. On Windows, run netsh wlan show drivers in Command Prompt to view supported radio types and security capabilities. Compare the installed wireless driver’s date and version with the one offered by the laptop manufacturer; Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance covers checking driver issues.
Wi-Fi 7 support in Windows starts with Windows 11 version 24H2, according to Microsoft. That is an operating-system compatibility threshold, not a promise of faster performance: the laptop hardware, driver, and access point must also support the relevant features. Check Microsoft’s Wi-Fi compatibility information.

Mac: check Wi-Fi 6E mode, not hidden speed switches
macOS exposes fewer low-level radio controls than many Windows adapter drivers. On a supported Wi-Fi 6E Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details for the connected network and check Wi-Fi 6E mode. Apple says Automatic uses supported 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands, while Off excludes 6 GHz. The control appears only with compatible hardware and a network configured with the same name across bands. See Wi-Fi settings on Mac.
Mac Wi-Fi settings also include features such as auto-join, Private Wi-Fi Address, and Low Data Mode. Private Wi-Fi Address is a privacy feature, and Low Data Mode reduces data usage; neither is a general-purpose speed setting. Apple’s network optimization guidance is aimed at administrators configuring networks for Apple devices.
Router settings and placement can matter more
If multiple devices have trouble, or performance improves greatly near the access point, focus on the router and coverage. Router menus differ, and local channel availability depends on region. If this is a school or workplace network, ask its administrator before changing network settings.
- Channels: Check nearby network congestion before choosing a channel. Microsoft identifies channels 1, 6, and 11 as non-overlapping 2.4 GHz choices in its consumer guidance; select among them based on local conditions. Many routers offer automatic channel selection. For 5 GHz, nearby access points still matter, though channel overlap is less of an issue.
- Channel width: Microsoft says reducing 2.4 GHz width to 20 MHz can be worth trying when the signal is strong and the channel is clear but the connection remains unreliable. Apple recommends Auto channel selection, 20 MHz on 2.4 GHz, and Auto or all available widths on 5 and 6 GHz. These are router-side options; see Apple’s recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.
- Placement: Put the access point centrally if possible, away from walls, metal, and the floor. Obstructions and distance affect signal quality.
- Firmware and supported modes: Keep router firmware current and enable compatible radio modes and bands. A newer mode only helps when the laptop, router, driver, and operating system support it.
An extender is a conditional option when the measured problem is coverage and you cannot reposition the access point. It will not fix an ISP limit, a laptop driver issue, or every source of interference. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance discusses coverage remedies.
Keep security compatible with performance
Use a security mode supported by both the router and laptop. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when both support it; a newer security option does not compensate for weak coverage or an unsupported adapter. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi security guidance.
