To keep a mini PC’s services reachable, prevent the operating system from suspending or hibernating it during idle time, and configure its firmware to power on again after AC power returns if the model supports that feature. Check power-button and lid actions, too. The precise controls depend on the operating system and mini PC model.
Which settings matter most for a mini PC server?
- Idle sleep and hibernation: Set them so the host does not enter a low-power state while services need to be available. Sleep and hibernate timeouts may be separate controls.
- Power, sleep, and lid actions: Make sure an accidental button press or lid event will not suspend or shut down the machine.
- Power recovery in BIOS/UEFI: If the server should restart after an outage, look for an AC power recovery setting and choose the option to power on when electricity returns, if available.
- Wake-on-LAN: Enable this only if you want to wake the machine remotely and the hardware and operating system support it. It does not keep services available while the PC is asleep.
Turning off the monitor is different from putting the computer to sleep. You can retain display power savings while preventing system sleep.
Windows: prevent sleep without disabling useful power controls
Set idle sleep and hibernation separately
In Windows power settings, set the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never (or the equivalent no-timeout option) when the mini PC must remain available through idle periods. Review the hibernate timeout separately: Microsoft documents sleep and hibernate idle timeouts as distinct controls in its Sleep settings overview.
Keep the display timeout separate from the computer’s sleep timeout. A screen can turn off while the PC and its services continue running.

Review button and lid actions
Check the configured actions for the power button, sleep button, and lid if those controls exist on your mini PC. Windows can assign actions such as sleep, hibernate, shutdown, or no action; an unexpected button or lid setting can make a headless server unavailable.
Check whether Windows is being kept awake
Do not assume a service or application will keep the computer awake. Windows has a policy that controls whether system-required requests are accepted or ignored. Review the machine’s configured behavior using Microsoft’s Allow system required requests documentation.

Inspect power behavior with powercfg
Open an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal and use these inspection commands as needed:
powercfg /areports the sleep states available on the system.powercfg /requestsshows active power requests.powercfg /lastwakereports what last woke the system.powercfg /waketimerslists active wake timers.powercfg /energycreates a power-efficiency diagnostic report.
Microsoft also documents sleep and power reports among its powercfg command-line options. These tools help diagnose behavior; they are not a reason to disable every sleep state. Change only what conflicts with the server’s availability needs.

Linux: prevent unattended suspend and check key or lid events
Configure the active power manager
Disable unattended suspend in the desktop environment or other power-management service that is active on the distribution. On systems using systemd, systemd-sleep controls sleep and hibernation modes, but the exact controls a user sees depend on the distribution and installed services. Consult the systemd-sleep.conf(5) manual and the documentation for the active power manager rather than assuming one setting applies to every Linux installation.
Check power and sleep key handling
On systems managed by systemd-logind, review how power, sleep, and—where relevant—lid events are handled. The logind.conf documentation describes ignore as an available action; its documented configuration defaults include suspend for the suspend key and lid switch. For a headless system, consider whether an accidental key or lid event could suspend the host.

Understand suspend versus hibernation
In suspend, operating-system execution pauses; complete power loss can cause data loss. Hibernation is designed to preserve state through complete power loss, but the machine’s services remain unavailable while it is hibernating. Neither is appropriate during periods when those services must stay reachable. Linux sleep states also depend on the platform and kernel configuration, as described in the kernel’s System Sleep States documentation.

Enable automatic power-on after AC returns
Look for firmware settings named Wake on After AC Loss, Restore AC Power Loss, After Power Failure, or similar. Select the option that powers the machine on when AC power returns if automatic recovery is wanted. ASUS states that its MiniPC BIOS supports Wake-on-LAN, Power On by RTC, and Wake on After AC Loss; that does not establish that other manufacturers or every model offer the same functions. Check the exact machine’s documentation and BIOS menus. See ASUS’s MiniPC BIOS support information.

Use Wake-on-LAN only for remote wake
Wake-on-LAN can be useful when you want to start a supported, sleeping or powered-off machine remotely. It is not a substitute for preventing sleep: while the PC is asleep, its services are not continuously available. Feature availability depends on the hardware and operating-system configuration.
How to verify the settings
- Confirm the OS behavior: Check that idle sleep and hibernation are configured as intended, then review power-button, sleep-button, and lid actions where applicable.
- Confirm firmware support: Find the AC recovery and Wake-on-LAN options in the specific mini PC’s BIOS/UEFI documentation or menus; do not assume a setting exists because another model has it.
- Restart and check: After making changes, perform a controlled restart and verify the operating system and services return as expected.
- Test outage recovery safely, if needed: Use a controlled power interruption only when it is appropriate for the system and its data. Do not treat an untested firmware option as proven recovery behavior.
There is no universal power profile for all mini PCs: the right configuration depends on whether services must be reachable at all times, the operating system’s power manager, and the firmware and hardware features available on the exact model.
