Unexplained changes to your router’s settings or behavior are reasons to investigate, not proof that it has been hacked. Check for unfamiliar DNS servers, routes, administrator accounts, remote-management access, tunnels, traffic-capture settings, or altered logs. Then verify the router’s firmware and configuration against the manufacturer’s guidance, secure its credentials, and contact your ISP or router maker if you cannot establish that it is safe.

Why router security matters

A home router connects devices to the internet and helps manage traffic between them. CISA describes the home wireless router as “the primary entrance for cybercriminals to access all of your connected devices” in its 2019 consumer guidance. That makes unexpected router changes worth checking—but a slow connection, an unfamiliar device, or a single odd setting does not by itself establish that someone compromised the router.

Settings that deserve investigation

Sign in through the router’s legitimate management interface, using the address or app specified by its maker or ISP. Look for changes you did not make, especially to settings that affect who can administer the router or where its traffic goes.

  • DNS servers: Unfamiliar DNS entries can redirect how devices look up website addresses.
  • Routes: Unexpected routing rules may send network traffic along a path you did not configure.
  • Administrator accounts: Look for unfamiliar users, changed usernames, or access you cannot explain.
  • Remote management: Check whether administration from outside your home network is enabled without your knowledge.
  • Tunnels or traffic capture: Investigate unexpected tunnel settings or options that capture network traffic.
  • Logs: Logging that has been disabled, cleared, or altered unexpectedly can be a warning sign, though there may be legitimate explanations.

CISA discusses these kinds of modifications in its September 2025 advisory on network-infrastructure compromise. That advisory covers state-sponsored activity against telecommunications and other networks; it provides examples of techniques to check for, not evidence that such incidents are common among household router owners.

How to check and secure your router

  1. Record unexpected settings. Before changing anything, note or photograph settings you do not recognize, if it is practical and safe to do so. Include the firmware version and any unfamiliar accounts or network settings.
  2. Check the exact model and firmware. Use the manufacturer’s support page for your router’s precise model and firmware version. Install an update the maker supports. Compare firmware integrity only if the product provides a reliable way to do so.
  3. Change the administrator password. Set a unique password that is not used for another account. US-CERT’s Small Office/Home Office Router Security guide says to change the default login username and password. Its guidance dates to 2011, so use the manufacturer’s current instructions for the menus and recovery steps on your device.
  4. Review Wi-Fi access. Change the Wi-Fi password if you have reason to believe it was exposed, and follow the router maker’s instructions for reviewing connected devices and wireless settings.
  5. Ask for model-specific help if concerns persist. Contact your ISP or the manufacturer for safe reset and recovery instructions. Menus and procedures differ by router; avoid assuming that a factory reset alone addresses every cause or that the same steps apply to every device.

CISA’s consumer material also recommends changing factory-set credentials and keeping router software current. See its digital-home guidance and the CISA summary of FTC ASUS router security tips for those baseline recommendations; follow current vendor directions for your device.

When to replace the router

If the manufacturer no longer provides security support for the exact router model, replacing it is safer than relying on fixes that will not receive future security updates. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance recommends replacing devices that no longer receive security support.

When choosing a replacement, confirm that the exact model is still supported and receives updates, check how the vendor delivers updates and support, verify compatibility with your ISP and local market, and match coverage to your home and connection needs. A suspicious symptom alone is not a reason to buy a new router if the device is supported and can be checked and secured.
