If you think someone got into your Wi-Fi router, take control of its settings, change both router passwords, install updates from the manufacturer or ISP, and use current Wi-Fi encryption. Then disable features you do not need and review connected devices. These steps reduce risk, but suspicious symptoms alone do not prove that the router was compromised.
First, recognize what suspicion can—and cannot—tell you
Unexpected devices, changed settings, or trouble connecting can be reasons to investigate, but they do not by themselves confirm unauthorized access. Router menus and recovery procedures vary by model. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions, or contact your ISP if it supplied the router.
If you cannot sign in as administrator, settings change back after you update them, or you have confirmed an intrusion, contact the manufacturer or ISP promptly for model-specific guidance. There is no single factory-reset and recovery sequence established for every router or incident.
Secure the router in this order

Regain administrative control
Open the router’s administration interface using the maker’s instructions, or the ISP’s instructions for provider-supplied equipment. Change the administrator password to a strong, unique password that you do not use for email, websites, or the Wi-Fi network. This password controls changes to router settings; the FTC notes it can also be used to change the Wi-Fi password. If you have lost access or cannot make settings stick, ask the manufacturer or ISP for help rather than guessing at a reset procedure. See the FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance.

Change the Wi-Fi password and network name
Set a unique Wi-Fi password, different from the administrator password. Replace a default network name with one that does not identify your household, address, or router brand. The FTC describes these as two separate router passwords with different purposes; both should be changed from defaults.

Update the router’s software
Check the manufacturer’s official support site for firmware or software for your exact model and hardware revision. Do not install firmware from an unrelated third-party site. For an ISP-provided router, ask whether updates are installed automatically and whether the device is still supported. Update steps are model-specific; the CISA guidance also stresses keeping devices updated.

Choose current Wi-Fi encryption
In the wireless security settings, choose WPA3 Personal if available; otherwise choose WPA2 Personal. WPA and WEP are outdated and insecure. The FTC calls WPA3 the newer and best available encryption and advises checking for updates on older routers; if WPA2 and WPA3 remain unavailable, consider replacing the router.

Disable features you do not use
Turn off remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not need them; the FTC warns these features can weaken security. Enable the router’s built-in firewall, and consider a guest network for visitors and devices that do not need access to your primary network. When you finish changing settings, log out of the administrator interface. These recommendations are in the FTC’s router guidance.

Review connected devices and secure them individually
Look in the router interface for a page labeled connected devices, wireless clients, or DHCP clients. Investigate entries you do not recognize; device names may be unclear, so check your own phones, computers, TVs, and smart-home equipment before deciding an entry is unauthorized. After securing the router, install available software updates on connected devices, replace default or reused device passwords, enable two-factor authentication where offered, and disconnect devices or features you no longer use. The FTC’s connected-device guidance covers these protections.
Decide whether to keep or replace the router
Suspicion alone does not mean you need to buy a new router. Consider replacement when the manufacturer or ISP no longer supports the model, it cannot be updated to use WPA2 or WPA3 Personal, or support cannot provide a credible way to restore control safely.

When to seek help instead of improvising
Contact the router maker or ISP if you cannot regain administrator access, settings will not stay changed, or you have evidence of a confirmed compromise. Ask for instructions for your exact model, including whether a reset is appropriate and how to restore it securely. Official consumer guidance does not prescribe factory resetting every router after every suspicion, nor establish that a reset invariably removes a sophisticated compromise.

Use current manufacturer or ISP support for present-day update and recovery instructions.
