Use an AI health answer as a starting point for verification, not as a diagnosis or personal treatment plan. A confident tone is not proof: the World Health Organization warns that large language models can produce health responses that sound plausible and authoritative but are wrong or seriously erroneous. Before acting, identify the answer’s claims, check its sources and dates, compare important points with reliable current guidance, and discuss consequential decisions with a healthcare professional.

Can you trust ChatGPT for medical advice?

Not on its own. A chatbot can help explain terminology or suggest questions to ask, but its answer may be incomplete, unsupported, out of date, or unsuitable for your situation. The NIH explains that generative chatbots predict likely next words from patterns in data; that does not mean they understand a person’s circumstances or verify each statement as they produce it. This description comes from an NIH News in Health article published in January 2024 and should not be assumed to describe every AI system identically. NIH News in Health: Artificial Intelligence and Your Health

The key distinction is between general information and advice for you. NIH researcher Dr. Ellen Fitzsimmons-Craft notes that a chatbot may give advice that is right in a general sense but not right for a particular person. Symptoms, medical history, medicines, allergies, age, pregnancy, and other circumstances can change what is appropriate.

How to check an AI health answer

  1. Separate claims from recommendations

Break the response into specific factual claims, interpretations, and suggested actions. For example, distinguish “this symptom can occur with condition X” from “you have condition X” or “take treatment Y.” The fluent explanation itself is not evidence.

  2. Open and verify every important citation

Follow the links rather than relying on a list of references. Confirm that each source exists, that it actually supports the claim, and that it points to original evidence or an accountable health organization. NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements advises checking whether health facts and figures are supported by references and whether opinion or advice is distinguished from evidence-based information. A citation that is broken, unrelated, or merely repeats another unsupported claim does not verify the answer. NIH ODS: How To Evaluate Health Information on the Internet

  3. Check who produced the source and why

Look for the organization responsible for the page, its purpose and funding, and the qualifications of the authors or reviewers. Check whether the source is trying to sell a medicine, supplement, test, or service. A qualified reviewer and a transparent purpose make a source easier to assess, but neither alone proves that a particular claim is correct.

  4. Check the review or update date

Find when the information was published, reviewed, or last updated. Then compare it with current official guidance: recommendations can change as evidence changes. A recent chatbot response can still cite stale material, so check the underlying source’s date rather than the date you asked the question.

  5. Cross-check consequential claims

Compare important claims with a relevant national health agency, recognized medical institution, current professional guidance, or a clinician. WHO advises people to identify the source of health claims and consult official, evidence-based information. Compare not just whether two pages use similar wording, but whether the evidence directly supports the claim, whether uncertainty is acknowledged, and whether the source is current. 6. Ask what personal context the answer lacks

Consider which details could change the advice: your symptoms and their severity, medical history, current medicines, allergies, and other relevant circumstances. If the answer does not account for information that matters, it cannot establish what is right for you. Do not treat a general response as an individualized evaluation.

  7. Discuss decisions that could affect your care

Talk with a qualified healthcare professional before using an AI answer to make decisions about diagnosis, medication, treatment, or whether to delay seeking care. NIH recommends discussing online health information with a healthcare provider; online material cannot replace an individualized professional evaluation. Protect your health information when using a chatbot

Avoid entering identifying or sensitive health details casually. Before sharing anything, review the service’s current privacy explanation and data controls, including what it says about handling information you provide. NIH recommends that health-information services explain what they do with user information, and WHO warns that some large language models may not adequately protect health information users share. If you cannot establish how a service handles sensitive details, do not provide them.

What AI accuracy studies can—and cannot—tell you

A research result about one task is not a reliability rating for every consumer health conversation. In a study reported by the National Library of Medicine on July 23, 2024, researchers asked GPT-4V to answer 207 questions from the NEJM Image Challenge and provide written rationales. In that closed-book comparison, the model selected correct diagnoses more often than physicians; physicians using open-book tools performed better than the model, especially on harder questions. Physician graders also identified errors in image descriptions and reasoning, including cases where the selected answer was correct. These findings concern a constrained clinical-image quiz, not general medical advice or an individual interaction. NLM Acting Director Stephen Sherry said in the report, “AI is not advanced enough yet to replace human experience, which is crucial for accurate diagnosis.” National Library of Medicine: NIH Findings Shed Light on Risks and Benefits of Integrating AI into Medical Decision-Making

Why an authoritative answer can still be wrong

WHO cautions that large language model responses can appear authoritative and plausible while being completely incorrect or containing serious errors, especially on health matters. WHO also raises concerns about bias in training data and convincing health disinformation, and calls for transparency, expert supervision, and rigorous evaluation. Confidence, detail, and polished wording are therefore not substitutes for checking evidence.

Regulatory language also needs careful interpretation. The FDA’s clinical decision support navigator discusses a framework for particular software functions, including clinician-support functions, and refers to information that is independently verified and validated, accurate, reliable, complete, and supported by evidence. It also states that software intended for patients or caregivers does not meet a particular clinician-support criterion. This is regulatory guidance about software functions—not FDA endorsement or certification of a consumer chatbot. Whether a specific tool falls within a regulatory framework depends on its intended use and the current FDA guidance.
