An unfamiliar DNS setting or suspicious redirect is a reason to check your router, but neither one proves it has been hacked. Compare its settings with your router maker’s or internet provider’s instructions, secure the router’s administrator and Wi-Fi passwords, and update its firmware. If settings keep changing or you cannot regain control, contact your ISP or router manufacturer and follow their model-specific recovery steps.
What changed DNS settings or suspicious traffic can—and cannot—tell you
A person with access to a router’s administrative controls may be able to change its settings, including the Wi-Fi password, according to the FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance. An unfamiliar DNS resolver is therefore worth investigating, but it is not proof of compromise by itself. DNS may be set by your internet provider, entered manually, or changed by someone who manages the network.
There is no universal list of “good” DNS addresses that applies to every router and ISP. Compare the value shown in your router’s administration interface with the configuration guidance for your exact router model and internet service. Avoid copying an address from an unsourced forum. A slow connection, one redirect, or a DNS address you do not recognize does not independently establish that someone has hacked your router.
Network-device compromises can involve unauthorized configuration changes or traffic monitoring. A CISA advisory revised September 3, 2025 describes activity involving targeted enterprise and telecommunications environments; it is not a measure of how likely a home router is to be compromised, nor a residential diagnostic checklist.

Check the router before changing its configuration
Record what you noticed
Before resetting anything, note when you noticed the issue and record the DNS values, unfamiliar administrator accounts or connected devices, unexpected port-forwarding or remote-management settings, and any redirects. Save screenshots or logs if practical. These details may help your ISP or router maker investigate, although CISA’s restoration guidance is aimed at network devices in organizational settings rather than providing a home-user evidence protocol.
Compare DNS with the instructions for your service
Open the router’s normal local administration interface and find its internet or WAN DNS settings. The exact labels and access method vary by model. Compare the values with the router manufacturer’s documentation or your ISP’s instructions for that model and connection. If you cannot identify the expected values, ask the provider or manufacturer rather than guessing.

Review the rest of the configuration
Look for administrator accounts you do not recognize, unexpected port forwarding, remote management you did not enable, and devices you cannot identify in the connected-device, wireless-client, or DHCP-client list. Device names can be vague or duplicated, so investigate an unfamiliar label rather than assuming it is an intruder. The FTC recommends checking the router’s connected-device listing.
Secure router access and update the firmware
- Change the administrator password. This password controls access to router settings. Use a unique password rather than reusing the old one.
- Change the Wi-Fi password. This is separate from the administrator password: it controls access to the wireless network. Set a new, unique password and reconnect household devices as needed.
- Install current firmware. Check the manufacturer’s support site for updates. If your ISP supplied the router, check with the ISP about updates, including whether they are applied automatically. Review the configuration again after updating.
- Turn off features you do not need. Disable remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not use them. Confirm the router firewall is enabled and wireless security is set to WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, following the router’s instructions.
- Sign out of the administration interface. If useful, set up a guest network to keep visitors’ devices separate from your primary network.
These are among the household security steps in the FTC’s guidance on securing home Wi-Fi. If the router will not let you change settings, or an unfamiliar administrator account has control, contact the ISP or manufacturer for recovery instructions.

When and how to reset the router
If unauthorized settings persist or you cannot restore trusted administrative access, ask the ISP or router maker whether a factory reset is appropriate and follow the exact procedure for your model. CISA’s countermeasure for restoring abused network devices supports isolating a device and restoring it to a secure state, potentially with a known-good configuration, a factory reset, and current vendor patches. That guidance is not a model-independent home-router reset guide.
A factory reset erases configuration and may leave you needing ISP credentials or other setup information. Before reconnecting the router and household devices, install available patches and reapply secure settings using the manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions. If you suspect that traffic interception exposed account credentials, use another trusted connection as a cautious precaution when changing important account passwords, and secure those accounts promptly.

Check devices on the network and decide whether to replace the router
Router security is only part of the picture: an unsecured or compromised device connected to the network can also be an entry point. Check household devices for signs of malware or account compromise and address those problems separately; fixing the router alone may not resolve them.
Do not buy a router solely because a DNS value looked unfamiliar. The FTC advises checking for updates on older routers that offer only WPA or WEP; if WPA2 or WPA3 remain unavailable after the update check, consider replacing the device with a router that supports WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal. Check the exact model’s documentation and your ISP’s requirements before choosing a replacement.
