The right alternative to the Sonos Beam Ultra depends on what you want to improve: a lower price, a smaller single-bar setup, stronger bass, or more convincing surround sound. The shortlist below covers each route, from the Sony HT-S2000 to systems with a separate subwoofer or wireless rear speakers. Prices and packages vary by country and change over time, so compare the current local listing and included components before buying.

Start with what the Beam Ultra offers

Sonos describes the Beam Ultra as a 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar. SoundGuys lists nine drivers, including two up-firing drivers, along with HDMI eARC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and room calibration; it also reports that the bar has no HDMI passthrough. These are manufacturer and reviewer descriptions, not a guarantee that every room or source will produce the same result. Sonos says home-theater Dolby Atmos requires a compatible TV connected over HDMI eARC or ARC. Check your TV and the audio formats available from your streaming device or console before paying extra for Atmos.

Do not confuse it with the older Sonos Beam (Gen 2). RTINGS describes Beam (Gen 2) as a 5.0 setup that supports Dolby Atmos; it is a different, more compact option, not another name for Beam Ultra. A single bar also has limits: without a separate subwoofer or rear speakers, it cannot provide the same physical bass hardware or discrete surround hardware as an expanded system.

Alternatives by budget and setup

Option Configuration and strengths Trade-offs to check Price evidence
Sony HT-S2000 Standalone 3.1-channel bar. TechRadar highlights clear dialogue and virtual Dolby Atmos. Bluetooth-only wireless streaming; no Wi-Fi. It lacks 4K 120Hz passthrough, which may matter to multiroom listeners and console owners. Virtual Atmos is not the same as discrete height speakers. TechRadar lists approximate snapshots of $349 / £299 / AU$695. Verify the live price and exact package in your country.
Sonos Beam (Gen 2) Compact 5.0 bar with Dolby Atmos support. RTINGS says it produces a wide soundstage for its size. No discrete subwoofer is included. Consider it when compactness and Sonos integration matter more than stronger bass from a separate sub. Current local price not stated by RTINGS in the cited comparison; check the regional listing.
Bose Smart Soundbar Compact alternative for buyers already using Bose equipment. RTINGS finds its surround and Atmos performance somewhat stronger than Beam (Gen 2) in its comparison. RTINGS gives Sonos the larger stereo soundstage. The better fit depends on whether you prioritize stereo music, surround/Atmos, or integration with equipment you already own. Current local price not stated by RTINGS in the cited comparison; check the regional listing.
Samsung HW-Q800F Midrange step-up. TechRadar calls it strong value and places it below the fuller surround experience of the HW-Q990F. Confirm the precise package, included subwoofer, TV features, and local price; value depends on the current bundle and price. Current local price not stated in TechRadar’s cited guide; check the regional listing.
Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7 + S 5.1.2-channel package with a separate subwoofer, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X. The What Hi-Fi? comparison reported stronger bass impact than Beam Ultra. What Hi-Fi? preferred Beam Ultra’s cohesion and spatial positioning in that comparison. These are review observations, not universal performance guarantees. What Hi-Fi? listed both systems at £699 in its UK article. This is a dated comparison price, not a current or universal price.
JBL Bar 1300MK2 11.1.4 system with detachable rechargeable rear speakers, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, according to TechRadar. TechRadar lists premium pricing and no 4K 120Hz passthrough or ALLM. Check gaming requirements and the full system’s footprint before choosing it. Current local price not stated in TechRadar’s cited guide; check the regional listing.

Choose by the problem you want to solve

Spend less and keep a simple setup

The Sony HT-S2000 is the budget-oriented standalone candidate in this shortlist. Its 3.1-channel design and Bluetooth make it a straightforward option if you want clearer TV audio without building a multiroom system. Its lack of Wi-Fi rules it out for buyers who need Wi-Fi-based multiroom listening, and the missing 4K 120Hz passthrough is a relevant limitation for some console connections.

  • Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.

Keep the bar compact and stay in an existing ecosystem

Beam (Gen 2) is the natural compact Sonos comparison, while Bose Smart Soundbar is worth considering if your home already uses Bose products. RTINGS’ comparison points to a trade-off rather than a universal winner: Bose does somewhat better for surround and Atmos, while Sonos delivers a larger stereo soundstage. Match that distinction to your main use, and check compatibility with any speakers or services you expect to keep using.

Get more bass from a separate subwoofer

A separate subwoofer can provide more physical bass impact than an all-in-one bar. In What Hi-Fi?’s UK comparison, the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7 + S delivered stronger bass impact than Beam Ultra, while the reviewer preferred Beam Ultra for cohesion and spatial positioning. Treat that as one publication’s listening comparison, not a promise about every room, placement, or setup. Include the subwoofer in the package and total cost comparison.

Add rear speakers for a larger surround setup

The JBL Bar 1300MK2’s detachable rechargeable rear speakers bring surround hardware that a single-bar package does not include. Its larger 11.1.4 configuration may better suit a listener prioritizing an enveloping home-theater arrangement, but it is a more involved system and TechRadar flags premium pricing. If gaming is central, its lack of 4K 120Hz passthrough and ALLM deserves particular attention.

Check compatibility and total cost before buying

  • TV connection: Verify HDMI eARC or ARC availability. Sonos specifies a compatible TV and eARC or ARC connection for home-theater Dolby Atmos.
  • Gaming chain: Check whether the soundbar passes through the resolution and refresh rate your console or TV setup uses. HT-S2000 lacks 4K 120Hz passthrough; TechRadar also lists that limitation for JBL Bar 1300MK2.
  • Wireless needs: If you want multiroom audio, confirm Wi-Fi support and ecosystem compatibility. HT-S2000 is Bluetooth-only for wireless streaming, while the JBL specification includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  • Room and placement: Measure the bar’s width and available space, then allow for the subwoofer and rear speakers if the system includes them. A larger package needs more placement flexibility than a single compact bar.
  • Complete package price: Compare what is actually in the box, not just the bar name. Sonos displays Beam Ultra bundles with Sub Mini and Era 100 speakers, illustrating how add-ons raise the total spend; confirm current availability and compatibility in your region.
  • Regional listing: Prices, stock, and bundled components can differ by country and date. The prices above are the snapshots specifically identified by the cited publications, not guaranteed current offers.
