To stream live ESPN networks, events, or replays, you generally need an eligible ESPN plan or a participating TV or streaming-provider package that includes the content. The app itself does not unlock those subscriptions.
What can you watch in the ESPN app for free?
ESPN says anyone can use the app for clips, highlights, news, and analysis without a subscription. That free access does not include live ESPN networks or events. ESPN Fan Support describes the app as free while clarifying that live network streams, events, and replays require an eligible subscription. Read ESPN’s explanation of app access.
What subscription unlocks live ESPN content?
There are two main routes: subscribe directly to ESPN or use a qualifying TV or streaming provider account. Which route works depends on the plan, the channel or event, and the content rights available to that provider. ESPN’s support information does not establish a complete event-by-event lineup or a current price comparison, so check access for the specific event before signing up.

A TV or streaming-provider package
You can sign in with a participating provider if your package includes ESPN or the relevant channel. Provider access generally mirrors the content available through your TV service; it does not add channels or events that the provider does not carry. ESPN notes that access depends on having a qualifying TV package and an account in good standing. Check ESPN’s provider sign-in guidance.
How to sign in with a TV provider
- In the ESPN app or on ESPN.com, choose the TV Provider sign-in option.
- Select your provider and enter the username and password for that provider account. These may be different from your ESPN or Disney login.
- On some connected devices, the app displays an activation code. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter it on ESPN’s activation page, then complete provider sign-in. Steps vary by provider. Open ESPN’s activation page.
ESPN’s support article on provider authentication was updated July 15, 2026. It says that a qualifying package and account in good standing provide access to streaming content that mirrors the viewer’s TV service.

How ESPN Unlimited through a provider works
Some providers offer ESPN Unlimited access, but the activation process and included entitlement depend on the partner. ESPN says Hulu + Live TV subscribers receive the ESPN Unlimited entitlement with immediate access through their MyDisney login. Other listed partners may require account activation. If you cancel or change an eligible provider plan, access to the ESPN subscription entitlement may end under that provider’s terms. Review ESPN’s partner and activation instructions.

For any paid route, verify the event’s availability, provider or plan entitlement, activation requirements, and current billing terms. Regional or other rights restrictions may affect what you can watch. A compatible phone, TV, or streaming device lets you use the app, but it does not substitute for the subscription entitlement.
