They work together, but they are not interchangeable: a compatible HDMI ARC connection can carry Atmos encoded as Dolby Digital Plus, while Sonos says eARC is required for lossless Dolby Atmos using Dolby TrueHD.
Dolby Atmos and eARC do different jobs
Dolby Atmos describes how audio can encode spatial sound. Sonos lists Atmos among the Beam Ultra’s supported home-theater formats and says its two upward-firing tweeters support spatial audio with Atmos. Sonos describes the result as “true 7.1.2 surround sound”; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent performance measurement. Sonos Beam Ultra product page.
eARC, or Enhanced Audio Return Channel, is an HDMI protocol for sending audio from a TV to a connected sound system. The Beam Ultra connects to the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port with the included HDMI cable. The TV port and the format it can pass through help determine what reaches the soundbar. Sonos Beam Ultra product page.
Does Dolby Atmos require eARC?
No—not for every Atmos signal. Sonos says most Atmos audio can travel over HDMI ARC when it uses Dolby Digital Plus. For lossless Atmos using Dolby TrueHD, Sonos specifies HDMI eARC. Sonos Support: Listen to Dolby Atmos on Sonos.

Sonos’s format list also includes Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos via Dolby TrueHD, multichannel PCM, and other formats, with eARC required for formats marked accordingly on its product page. That is a format-capability distinction—not a promise that eARC will make stereo or non-Atmos content sound like Atmos. Sonos Beam Ultra product page.
What must be in place for the Beam Ultra to receive Atmos?
Atmos support on the soundbar is only one part of the signal path. Check each link between the content and the Beam Ultra:

- TV audio handling: A streaming device may support Atmos, but the TV still has to pass an Atmos-compatible signal to the soundbar. Sonos notes that some TVs re-encode audio from a capable source device as Dolby Digital 5.1. Sonos Support.
- Service, subscription, and title: A streaming service may limit Atmos to particular subscription tiers, and not every title has an Atmos track. Check the service’s details for the plan and program you are playing. Sonos Support.
- Format reaching the soundbar: Verify the current signal in the Sonos app rather than relying only on the TV, streaming box, or service’s Atmos badge.
How to check whether the Beam Ultra is receiving Atmos
Sonos says its app displays the audio format being decoded and identifies Atmos reception in Now Playing and About My System. Use those indicators while the specific show, film, or other content is playing. If the app reports a different format, the source, title, TV processing, or connection may not be delivering Atmos for that playback. Sonos Support.

The Beam Ultra package includes an HDMI cable, and Sonos’s connection instructions use the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port. Start with the supplied cable and confirm that it is connected to the TV’s labeled ARC/eARC port; the product information does not establish a separate cable purchase as necessary for a normal connection.
