What are Meta Muse Image and Midjourney?
Meta Muse Image
Meta announced Muse Image on July 7, 2026, as an image-generation model available in Meta AI. Its consumer workflow is built around prompts, supplied photos, conversational context, and iterative edits. Meta’s examples include restoring a photo, combining images, changing a style, and marking up an image by circling, sketching, or annotating the area to change. These describe the intended workflow; they do not establish that every feature is available to every account or in every country.
Meta says everyday creation in Meta AI is free, with subscriptions for people who want to create more. The launch announcement described expansion to additional countries and to Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp as forthcoming at that time, so check the service in your region rather than assuming each surface has the same access.

Midjourney
Midjourney is a subscription image-generation service with a browser-based Create feed, prompt and settings controls, image organization, discovery, personalization, and an Editor. Its official version page says V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026. Midjourney describes that release as focused on aesthetics, image quality, and personalization; this is the company’s characterization, not an independent comparative result. Which one makes better images?
There is no substantiated universal winner. The official product materials explain features and present vendor examples, but they do not establish that Muse Image or Midjourney consistently makes better images in a neutral, controlled comparison. A result depends on the prompt, model version, reference material, editing, and what the image is meant to do.
For a useful comparison, judge the actual outputs against the job rather than a single overall “quality” label:
- Prompt adherence: Did the image include the required subjects, details, and constraints?
- Composition and coherence: Are the layout, perspective, and relationships between elements convincing?
- Style and realism: Does the result fit the intended look, whether realistic or stylized?
- Text and consistency: If needed, can it render the requested text and keep a subject recognizable across iterations?
- Editing and delivery: Can you fix a flawed area and produce an image suitable for its intended use?
Midjourney’s version-specific documentation says V8.1 supports 2K HD images and is faster than earlier releases. That is a claim about V8.1, not a direct resolution comparison with Muse Image or proof of an overall quality lead. Midjourney version documentation

Muse Image: iterate through conversation and markup
Muse Image is designed for a natural-language loop: describe what you want, provide a reference photo when useful, then refine the result in the conversation or mark the desired change directly on the image. That can suit someone who wants to work through an idea without first learning a broad set of generation controls. Meta’s developer API is a separate route, documented for text prompts with optional reference images and for generation and editing endpoints; its requested dimensions set an aspect ratio rather than exact output dimensions. Midjourney: use a broader set of creation and editing controls
Midjourney’s website provides a Create feed and controls for managing and refining generations. Its Editor documentation lists remixing, inpainting or region changes, pan, zoom out, image upload, canvas resizing, and layers. Midjourney also offers personalization: users select images to build a style profile that influences generation. The feature requires setup, and profile compatibility varies by version. What do they cost?
Meta’s launch announcement describes everyday Muse Image creation in Meta AI as free and mentions subscriptions for users who want more. It does not establish a complete consumer allowance or subscription-price comparison, so do not read “free” as unlimited generations. Meta’s developer API is a separate product path.
