To check ink on a Canon G7020, look at the ink-tank indicator on the printer’s front and visually inspect each tank. Ink near the lower-limit line is low; refill it with the matching Canon-specified ink until it reaches the upper-limit line. Canon’s G7000-series online manual covers the G7020 and provides the refill procedure.
How to check Canon G7020 ink levels
- Look at the ink-tank indicator on the front of the printer.
- Check the remaining ink in each tank visually. Ink at the upper-limit line indicates a full tank; ink near the lower-limit line means the tank is running low and should be refilled.
Canon warns that printing when ink is below the lower-limit line may consume ink as the printer returns to printable status and may damage the printer. Refill to the upper-limit line: stopping below it can prevent the printer from detecting the remaining ink level correctly. See Canon’s G7000 series manual: Checking Ink Level.
How to refill ink on a Canon G7020
Use a new ink bottle specified by Canon for this printer, and match its color to the tank. Keep the printer level throughout the process; Canon warns that turning it upside down or onto its side can cause ink to leak.
- Make sure the printer is on, then open the scanning unit/cover. Avoid touching the ink tubes or other internal parts.
- Open the ink-tank cover for the tank you need to refill. The left cover is for black ink; the right cover is for the color tanks.
- Carefully open the tank cap. Ink on the inside of the cap may spatter.
- Take a new bottle and gently twist off its cap while holding the bottle upright. Do not shake it.
- Align the bottle tip with the inlet of the matching-color tank. Slowly turn the bottle upside down, insert it, and support it as the tank fills.
- Stop when the ink reaches the upper-limit line. Lift and slowly tilt the bottle as you remove it; do not leave it in the tank.
- Close the tank cap fully, close the ink-tank cover, and gently close the scanning unit/cover. Secure the bottle cap and store the bottle upright.

If the refill does not go as expected
- Ink is not flowing from the bottle: slowly remove the bottle and reinsert it.
- The tank is near the lower-limit line: refill it rather than continuing to print at a level below the line.
- Prints are faint or have white streaks despite sufficient ink: consult Canon’s separate maintenance procedure; the visible tank level alone does not identify the cause.
Ink bottle handling and compatibility
- Use only ink bottles Canon specifies for the G7020, and match each bottle’s color to the tank.
- Do not transfer or mix ink. Keep bottle caps closed, store bottles upright, and take care to avoid splashes.
- Keep ink bottles out of children’s reach; do not drink the ink.
The refill instructions establish that you need Canon-specified, color-matched bottles, but they do not identify a particular bottle model number. Check Canon’s current G7020 compatibility information and the bottle label before buying an exact product.
