Choose by comparing the actual plan, phone compatibility, and trip—not by assuming one SIM format is always cheaper or better. A travel eSIM is convenient if your phone supports eSIM, is unlocked for the provider, and you want to arrange service before arrival. A local prepaid SIM may suit you better if you need a local number or local-carrier plan features, or are staying longer and can meet local registration requirements. Before buying either, check whether your current plan already covers roaming, particularly for eligible travel within the EU.
What is the difference between a travel eSIM and a local SIM card?
An eSIM is a SIM profile downloaded to a secure element built into a device; a physical SIM is a removable module. The GSMA says eSIM provides security and protection equivalent to a removable SIM card. The format itself does not determine which carrier or destination network you use, what a plan costs, or whether it includes calls and texts. GSMA: eSIM
A travel eSIM can come from a destination carrier or a global connectivity provider. A local physical SIM is a removable card sold for a destination-country plan. Local-carrier prepaid plans often include a local number, but confirm the specific offer: it may include calls and SMS, or it may be data-only. Compare the options that matter for your trip
| Factor | Travel eSIM | Local physical SIM |
|---|---|---|
| Phone compatibility | Your phone must support eSIM. It generally also needs to be unlocked to use another carrier, and must support the destination network’s bands. | Your phone needs a compatible SIM slot and destination-band support. It may also need to be unlocked to accept another carrier’s card. |
| Getting connected | Depending on provider and device, you may be able to buy and install the plan before travelling. | You need to obtain and insert the card, then follow the carrier’s activation steps. Availability and registration vary by destination. |
| Local number | Plan-dependent. Do not assume a data-only eSIM gives you a phone number. | Local prepaid plans often include a local number; check the specific plan and its calling and SMS terms. |
| Cost | Compare total price, allowance, validity, and top-up costs for your itinerary. There is no universally cheapest option. | Compare local prepaid offers and any registration or top-up requirements. A local SIM is not automatically cheaper. |
| Coverage | Depends on the provider, partner network, destination, and device compatibility. | Depends on the local operator and device compatibility. A physical card alone does not guarantee better coverage. |
| Often a good fit when… | You want to arrange connectivity ahead of arrival and have a compatible, unlocked phone. | You want a local number or destination-carrier features, or are staying longer and can complete the purchase and registration steps. |
For either option, check the provider’s destination coverage and the phone’s radio-frequency compatibility. The GSMA advises checking both device compatibility and the operator’s roaming arrangements. GSMA: Networks

Check these details before you leave
- Check the phone and carrier lock. Confirm your device supports the SIM format you plan to use and is unlocked for the intended carrier. On iPhone, Apple says an unlocked phone shows “No SIM Restrictions” under Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. Apple Support
- Check destination compatibility and service. Confirm that your phone supports the destination’s cellular bands and that the provider serves the places you will visit. A plan’s availability in a country does not by itself establish coverage everywhere in your itinerary.
- Confirm what the plan includes. Check whether it is data-only or includes a phone number, calls, and SMS. If you need a number for bookings or verification, do not rely on an assumption; verify the plan’s terms.
- Compare full trip costs. Put the plan price, data allowance, validity period, and top-up terms alongside your home carrier’s roaming offer. The U.S. Department of State notes that many U.S. plans do not include international service by default and advises travellers to check with their carrier. - Check local SIM registration rules. Some countries require identification to register a SIM, and requirements vary. Find out what is needed before you depend on buying a card after arrival.
- For travel within the EU, check your home-plan roaming first. Eligible travellers may use domestic prices under the EU’s “roam like at home” framework, subject to fair-use conditions. One fair-use consideration is whether you spend more time at home or use your phone more at home than abroad. Check your operator’s terms and eligibility. Your Europe: Roaming costs
So, which should you use?
- Choose a travel eSIM if your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, the provider covers your destination, and you value setting up connectivity before arrival. Check carefully whether the plan provides only data or also a number, calls, and SMS.
- Choose a local physical SIM if a local number or local-carrier offer matters more, or a destination plan fits a longer stay. First check the purchase process, registration rules, compatible SIM slot, and plan terms.
- Use your existing roaming plan if its cost and allowance work for your itinerary. For eligible EU trips, check “roam like at home” and fair-use conditions before paying for another service.
There is no single price or coverage ranking that applies to every destination: the right comparison depends on your phone, home carrier, destination, dates, trip length, and data needs. GSMA Intelligence reported in 2024 that 51% of eSIM users across Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, South Korea, Spain, the UAE, the UK, and the U.S. had used an eSIM while travelling abroad for leisure or personal reasons in the previous 12 months. In the same 11-country survey, 28% of travel eSIM users had bought service from a global international-roaming connectivity provider. Those figures show travel is a reported eSIM use case; they do not establish that eSIMs are cheaper or better for every traveller. GSMA Intelligence: Consumer eSIM Adoption Survey 2024
