First check the provider’s rules: installing the eSIM profile and starting the plan’s validity period are not necessarily the same event, and the start trigger varies by plan.
Before you buy: check the phone and the plan
Confirm eSIM support and carrier unlock status
Support depends on the exact phone model, its regional variant, the carrier, and sometimes the plan. Apple lists iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later among the models that support travel eSIM use, but notes regional exceptions and requires a supporting provider. That does not mean every phone with a SIM tray—or every Android phone—can use an eSIM. If in doubt, check the manufacturer’s current specifications and ask your carrier or eSIM provider about your exact model.
Your phone may also need to be unlocked to use a travel plan from another carrier. Apple requires an unlocked iPhone for that use; Google says a SIM-locked Pixel may be limited to the carrier that sold it until it is unlocked. Check your phone’s carrier or SIM-lock status, or ask the carrier that supplied it, before purchasing.
Check coverage, terms, and when validity begins
Confirm that the plan covers your destination and fits your intended use. Compare the total price, data allowance and speed policy, validity duration, whether calls and texts are included or the plan is data-only, hotspot rules, support availability, and installation or reinstallation rules.

Most importantly, find the exact validity start trigger in the provider’s terms. A profile may be downloadable before departure while service validity begins only after it connects to a supported network at the destination; another plan may start earlier. Do not assume that installation always starts—or never starts—the clock. If the trigger is unclear, ask the provider before installing.
Install the eSIM before departure
Installing at home gives you time to resolve setup problems while you still have a reliable internet connection. Do it before leaving if the plan’s activation rules allow it. Orange Travel recommends installing a few hours before a trip in its own instructions; that timing is provider-specific, not a general requirement.

- Connect to Wi-Fi or another reliable internet connection. Most iPhone eSIM installations require internet access. Keep the provider’s app, QR code, activation code, or other instructions ready.
- Start setup using the method your provider gives you. Depending on the provider and phone, activation may happen through an app, a QR code, a carrier prompt, or manual entry of an activation code. If you need to scan a QR code displayed on the phone being set up, have the code available on another screen or device.
- Follow the phone’s prompts. If the phone offers line labels, name the new line “Travel” so it is easy to distinguish from your home number. This is a convenience, not a network requirement.
- Check the plan status and save the instructions. Note whether the profile is merely installed or whether the plan’s validity has started. Keep support details and any setup instructions somewhere accessible without mobile data.
Do not delete an installed eSIM as a casual troubleshooting step. Whether a profile or QR code can be reused depends on the provider; confirm that it can be reissued or reinstalled before removing it.
Choose the travel eSIM for data when you arrive
- Turn on the travel line. If it is switched off, enable it in your phone’s SIM or cellular settings.
- Set the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service) and select the travel line under Cellular Data (or Mobile Data). On Pixel, go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and choose the default data SIM.
- Set data roaming for the travel line only if the provider requires it. Some travel plans need data roaming enabled to connect; Orange Travel’s documented setup requires it. That does not mean roaming is always needed or free. Follow the selected plan’s instructions.
- Check the home line’s data and roaming settings. Confirm that the travel line is the one being used for cellular data and that the home line is not using data unexpectedly. Keeping a home line active may preserve calls or texts on supported configurations, but it can still incur roaming charges. Check your home carrier’s terms and settings.
Device-specific setup paths
iPhone
Apple’s general travel guidance lists iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, or later, a supporting carrier or provider, and an internet connection as requirements, subject to regional exceptions. For another carrier’s travel plan, the iPhone must be unlocked. Providers may offer QR-code, app-based, or carrier-assisted activation. Follow the provider’s current instructions: prompts and labels can differ by iOS version and region.

To choose the data line, use Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service) > Cellular Data (or Mobile Data), then select the travel eSIM. Apple documents additional travel-eSIM behavior in iOS 26 for some purchases and return-home switching. This is version- and situation-specific, so check the current settings on your iPhone rather than assuming it applies to every iOS version or region.
Pixel and other Android phones
Google’s documented Pixel setup path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM, followed by the provider or carrier prompts. To select the data line or adjust roaming, use Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Available options vary by phone and Android version.

- Check that the travel eSIM line is enabled and selected for mobile data.
- Confirm that the plan covers your location and that its validity has begun according to its terms.
- Check whether the provider requires data roaming on the travel line.
- Verify that your home line is not selected for data by mistake.
- Restart the phone or follow the provider’s troubleshooting instructions. If Pixel setup problems persist, Google directs users to their carrier for help.
Menu names and provider rules can change. For destination coverage, plan validity, local registration requirements, and possible roaming charges, the selected provider and home carrier are the authorities; those details cannot be determined without your destination, phone variant, carrier, and plan.
