How the three tools count usage
The billing units differ, so headline prices and allowance counts are not directly comparable. A workflow run can involve many billable steps, and each platform measures those steps differently.
| Platform | Usage meter | What to count in your workflow |
|---|---|---|
| n8n | Workflow executions | Complete workflow runs; n8n says its cloud pricing is based on monthly executions regardless of workflow complexity. n8n pricing |
| Make | Credits | Module actions and any additional credit consumption from certain modules, data bundles, or built-in AI. Make pricing |
| Zapier | Tasks | Successful actions; triggers do not count toward the task limit, and some actions may use more than one task. Zapier pricing |
Make’s official comparison page says billing transitioned from operations to credits in November 2025; its current pricing page uses credits. Make’s comparison page
What the published plan figures show
The figures below are vendor-published plan information displayed on the companies’ pricing pages as of October 4, 2026. They are not a like-for-like cost comparison: the meters, currencies, included usage, and workflow patterns differ. Check the linked pages for current terms and availability in your market.

Estimate with a representative workflow
- Choose a real workflow and estimate its monthly runs.
- List the successful actions in each Zapier run, the module actions and data bundles in each Make scenario, and the full workflow executions in n8n.
- Include AI calls and any steps that may consume additional credits or tasks.
- Check each platform’s exact app operations and plan requirements, then estimate total monthly use against its current allowance and pricing.
- If considering self-hosted n8n, include server infrastructure, monitoring, updates, and maintenance in the cost.
This approach compares the billable work you expect to perform rather than comparing unlike allowance numbers.
What each platform is best suited to
Choose n8n for technical control and execution-based billing
n8n describes itself as a source-available, self-hostable, low-code AI workflow builder for technical teams. Its official comparison page lists 1,000+ integrations, but that vendor count does not establish support for every app operation. Check the specific connector and action you need. n8n workflow and integration information
Rank #2
Its technical capabilities include custom JavaScript or Python, API requests, webhooks, GraphQL, branching, error handling, and custom nodes. That flexibility is useful when a workflow depends on an API operation or transformation not covered by a standard connector. It also means the people responsible for the workflow need to be able to understand and maintain the custom logic.
For n8n Cloud, the published Starter and Pro figures above are priced by monthly workflow executions, regardless of complexity. n8n also offers a self-hosted Community Edition, which its comparison pages describe as having no license cost and unlimited executions. Those statements concern the software license and execution limit, not the total cost of running it: the operator still supplies and maintains the infrastructure. Business and Enterprise options add organizational features, with availability and terms depending on plan. n8n pricing and hosting options n8n comparison
Rank #3
- Good fit: teams comfortable with APIs, data structures, code, and operational maintenance.
- Trade-off: self-hosting gives the operator more control but also responsibility for infrastructure, monitoring, updates, and upkeep.
Choose Make for a visual scenario builder and branching
Make centers its workflow design on a visual Scenario Builder with drag-and-drop construction. Its pricing page lists routers and filters, more than 3,000 apps, and AI-related products and features. Those catalog and feature claims are vendor-published; verify the exact app operation and plan requirement for your workflow. Make pricing and features
Make says each module action usually consumes a credit. Certain modules, data-bundle behavior, and built-in AI may consume more, so a complex or high-volume scenario can use credits faster than a simple run. Estimate from the scenario’s actual modules and data volume instead of counting scenarios alone. Make credit details
Rank #4
- Good fit: people who prefer a visual canvas and need multi-step flows with routers or filters.
- Trade-off: the credit meter takes estimation; module count alone may not capture credit use where bundles, special modules, or AI are involved.
Choose Zapier for low-code setup and broad app coverage
Zapier’s pricing page lists more than 9,000 apps and includes Tables, Forms, workflow logic, and MCP in its broader platform. The app total is a vendor-published catalog figure, not a guarantee that the trigger or action you need is available. Test the precise app operation before building around it. Zapier pricing and platform information
Zapier counts successful actions as tasks; the trigger that starts a Zap does not count toward the task limit. Some actions may consume more than one task. At the plan limit, usage may move to pay-per-task billing if enabled; otherwise workflows pause. Review account settings and task-tier terms so an allowance overrun does not surprise you. - Good fit: teams prioritizing low-code onboarding and a large app catalog.
- Trade-off: task usage follows successful actions, so workflows with many actions or high run volume can use an allowance quickly.
Check integrations, ownership, and maintenance before choosing
Catalog size is only a starting point. For every workflow that matters, confirm that the platform supports the exact trigger, action, required fields, and relevant plan. A connector listing may not include the operation, data behavior, or capability your process needs.
Also decide who will own failures and updates. A workflow that calls a custom API or uses code may need a technical maintainer; a self-hosted installation also needs an operator. A visual builder can make a scenario easier to inspect, but it does not remove the need to monitor errors or validate the output. For team use, compare the plan-specific collaboration, history, concurrency, and governance features rather than assuming they are identical across tiers. n8n’s pricing and comparison pages describe plan-specific collaboration and governance; confirm current terms on the plan page. n8n plan features n8n plan comparison
Match the platform to your workflow
- Pick n8n when custom code or APIs, self-hosting, and counting one complete workflow execution are priorities—and your team can handle technical upkeep.
- Pick Make when a visual canvas and branching suit the process, and you can model credit consumption from modules, data, and AI use.
- Pick Zapier when quick low-code setup and a broad connector catalog are priorities, and the expected successful-action volume fits the task plan.
If two options appear suitable, build a small representative version of the workflow in each and verify its exact connector operations, expected billing units, and plan limits before moving production work.
