If wired Ethernet became slower after a Realtek GbE driver update, the timing makes a driver problem plausible—but it does not prove one. Record the adapter and driver details, check the cable and whether other devices are affected, then use Windows’ reversible Roll Back Driver option if available. Retest after each change so you can tell whether the update was actually involved.
1. Record the adapter, driver and speed change
Before changing anything, note the exact Ethernet adapter name and its driver details. In Windows 10 or 11, right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and double-click the Realtek Ethernet adapter. On its Driver tab, record the provider, version and date. Also note when the update happened and which Windows version you use.
If you have a trustworthy before-and-after result, compare the same speed test or local file transfer under similar conditions. A speed test can show that performance changed, but by itself it cannot identify a driver as the cause.
2. Check the cable and isolate the network
Inspect the wired connection
- Make sure the Ethernet cable is seated at both ends and is connected to a router’s LAN port, not its internet or WAN port.
- If you have one available, try a known-good Ethernet cable. This checks for a damaged or unreliable cable; a higher cable category is not, by itself, a fix for a driver regression.
Microsoft recommends checking the cable connection and trying another cable in its Windows Ethernet connection troubleshooting guide.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Compare another device on the same network
Test another computer on the same network, if possible. If both devices are slow, look beyond this PC: the router, internet service or another shared part of the network may be responsible. If only the Realtek-equipped PC is affected, concentrate on its driver, adapter and Windows configuration. This comparison helps narrow the cause; it does not, on its own, identify the faulty component.
3. Roll back the Realtek driver
If the slowdown began after a recent update, try restoring the previous driver before uninstalling anything. Microsoft says, “If the issue occurred after a Windows Update, reinstalling the previous driver often resolves it.” That is a troubleshooting recommendation, not a guarantee.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters, right-click the Realtek Ethernet adapter, and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if the button is available. Follow the prompts; Windows may require administrator permission.
- Restart the PC, then repeat the same speed test or transfer under similar conditions.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, Windows may not have a previous driver package to restore. Microsoft’s guidance covers rollback in Update drivers through Device Manager in Windows.
4. Reinstall only after saving the correct driver
If rollback is missing or does not help, get a backup driver before removing the current one—especially if the PC might be offline afterward. For a laptop or prebuilt computer, start with the computer maker’s support page and search by the exact model. For a custom-built PC, check the motherboard maker’s support page. Microsoft advises keeping a backup driver and describes uninstalling the adapter and restarting so Windows can try to reinstall it in its Ethernet troubleshooting guide.

- Download and save the driver intended for your exact computer or motherboard model and Windows release.
- In Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the Realtek Ethernet adapter, and choose Uninstall device. Read the prompts carefully; do not select an option to remove driver software unless you have the correct replacement saved and understand the prompt.
- Restart the PC and check whether Windows reinstalls a working adapter driver.
- If Windows does not restore a working connection, install the saved manufacturer package using its included instructions.
- Restart if the installer requests it, then retest before making another change.
5. Match any Realtek download to the actual adapter
Realtek offers several controller families and separate package tracks; a package with a newer date is not automatically the right one for a particular PC. First determine whether the Ethernet adapter is built into the PC or motherboard (typically PCIe) or is a USB Ethernet adapter. Then match the controller and Windows release, and prefer the PC or motherboard maker’s package when one is provided.
Realtek’s PCIe network-controller catalog and USB network-controller catalog list different device and package families. As listed on October 4, 2026, the PCIe catalog included Windows 10/11 NDIS package 10.80.50 and Windows 11 NetAdapterCx package 11.031.50, both posted August 28, 2026; it also listed separate non-power-saving variants. These are catalog entries, not a recommendation to install them on every system. Confirm compatibility for your exact adapter and PC before downloading.

6. If the slowdown remains
Retest after each change and keep the adapter name, Windows version, driver provider, version and date, update timing, and test conditions together. If the problem persists, those details can help the PC maker, network administrator or Microsoft support narrow it down.
- If only this PC is slow, continue investigating its driver, adapter and Windows setup or contact the computer or motherboard maker.
- If multiple devices are slow, investigate the router, internet service or shared network path; contact the network administrator if this is a managed network.
Microsoft’s cited guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting page.
