The Samsung Galaxy A36 5G is a well-documented large-screen Android option, while the iPhone 16e is a smaller-screen iOS alternative. But the available evidence does not establish current prices or compare either phone’s battery life during reading, so neither can be named the best-value or most comfortable choice for every reader. Choose by local price, screen size, handling comfort, and the settings available on the exact model.
Which affordable phones are worth considering for reading?
Two phones have relevant published display and battery details: Samsung’s Galaxy A36 5G and Apple’s iPhone 16e. They differ in screen size and platform, but the cited manufacturer information is not a head-to-head reading test.
| Phone | Display details | Published battery claim | What the figures establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy A36 5G | 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED; maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz; 1,200 nits in High Brightness Mode. Samsung product specifications | 5,000 mAh typical capacity; up to 29 hours of video playback. Samsung says UX Connect Research assessed the playback estimate in the UK from January 16–27, 2025, on pre-release devices using default settings on LTE and 5G Sub6; actual results vary, and 5G mmWave was not used. Samsung product specifications | A large display and a manufacturer-reported video-playback estimate. Neither figure measures reading comfort or reading-session endurance. |
| Apple iPhone 16e | 6.1-inch OLED screen; USB-C. Apple announcement, February 20, 2025 | Apple says it lasts up to six hours longer than iPhone 11 and up to 12 hours longer than all generations of iPhone SE. Apple announcement, February 20, 2025 | Apple’s comparison with older iPhone models—not a reading test or a comparison with the Galaxy A36 5G. |
The Galaxy A36 5G’s 1,200-nit specification applies in High Brightness Mode; it does not mean the phone continuously operates at that brightness. Likewise, Samsung’s video-playback estimate and Apple’s comparison with older iPhones should not be treated as evidence of how many hours either phone will last while you read.
How to choose a screen for long reading sessions
Balance text size with handling comfort
A larger screen can show more text at once or make text easier to enlarge, but it may be less comfortable to hold for extended periods. Samsung lists a 6.7-inch display for the A36 5G; Apple lists a 6.1-inch OLED screen for the iPhone 16e. Screen size alone does not establish which phone will feel better in your hand. If you can, try the exact model and adjust text size before buying.

Compare brightness and panel details carefully
Consider screen size, resolution, panel type, and the conditions attached to any brightness figure. A brightness number tied to a particular mode is not a statement of typical or sustained brightness. The published A36 5G specifications provide a High Brightness Mode figure; the cited iPhone 16e announcement does not provide a comparable brightness figure.
Check display controls on the exact model
Adaptive brightness, warm-tone or Night Light settings, dark theme, refresh-rate controls, and flicker-prevention options can vary by phone and model. Motorola’s support instructions describe adaptive brightness, dark theme, and scheduled Night Light on covered models, while noting that refresh-rate and flicker-prevention settings may be unavailable on some models. Those instructions are not evidence that a Samsung or Apple phone offers the same controls. Motorola display-settings guidance

How to compare battery life for reading
Look for battery evidence that matches your intended use. Video playback, a manufacturer’s comparison against an older phone, and an independent reading-session test measure different things. The cited sources do not provide a comparable long-reading endurance test for these two phones, so their battery claims cannot support a reading-time ranking.
- Check whether a figure is a manufacturer estimate, a comparison with another model, or an independent test.
- Keep the stated conditions with the number: Samsung’s A36 5G estimate concerns video playback under specified test conditions, not reading.
- Compare current local prices and software support as well as display and battery information; no regional price or stock comparison is established here.
Settings to make long sessions more comfortable
- Set brightness for the room. Start with comfortable ambient lighting, then adjust screen brightness rather than assuming the brightest setting is best. On Motorola models covered by its instructions, adaptive brightness can be adjusted in display settings; menus vary by model. Motorola display-settings guidance
- Try a warmer screen in the evening. A scheduled Night Light can reduce the screen’s blue-toned appearance where the exact model offers it. Motorola documents this option for the models covered by its guide; check the phone’s own settings for availability.
- Use dark theme if it suits your app and surroundings. Motorola notes that not all apps support dark theme. Samsung says dark mode may support battery efficiency on OLED displays, but does not quantify the savings; do not rely on it for a particular battery-life gain. Samsung Gulf dark-mode guidance
- Choose text and refresh settings to suit you. Increase text size or change refresh settings only where the exact model offers a useful option. The available sources do not report measured flicker values for either candidate phone.
What “affordable” means for this choice
Affordability depends on your country, budget, and the phone’s current local price. The cited information does not establish current regional pricing or availability for the Galaxy A36 5G or iPhone 16e, so it cannot show whether either meets your price ceiling or is the best value where you live. Check the local price and the exact regional model before deciding.
