A successful extraction, password, familiar sender name, or clean scan is not proof that every file is safe. Treat extracting the archive and opening or running its contents as separate decisions.
Can a ZIP file contain a virus?
Yes. A ZIP is a container; compressing files does not make them harmless. Malware can be delivered in an archive, and a deceptive message may make an unexpected attachment look legitimate. Microsoft advises caution with unexpected attachments and convincing messages that imitate known contacts or businesses (Microsoft: How malware can infect your PC).
Keep two decisions separate: whether it is appropriate to extract the archive, and whether it is safe to open or run a particular item inside it. Extraction without an error only means the archive could be unpacked; it is not a security check.
How to safely extract an unfamiliar ZIP
- Verify the source and context. Ask whether you were expecting the file, whether the sender address and message make sense, and whether a download came from the official site you intended to visit. If a message is unexpected or pressures you to act, do not proceed based on the displayed sender name. Confirm through a separate, trusted channel.
- Keep security protection enabled and current. Scan the downloaded archive with the antivirus product already installed and updated. Microsoft recommends current antivirus protection and identifies Microsoft Defender Antivirus as built into modern Windows versions (Microsoft: Protect your PC from unwanted software). A clean scan lowers risk but cannot guarantee that every threat will be detected. Do not turn off antivirus or SmartScreen just to get past a warning.
- Heed download warnings. On Windows, downloaded files can carry origin information known as Mark of the Web, which may prompt a warning or block. Microsoft says, “Only unblock files from trusted sources” (Microsoft: Information about the Attachment Manager in Microsoft Windows). An Unblock control is not a safety verdict: use it only when you trust the source and understand the file’s purpose.
- Use an up-to-date built-in or reputable archive tool. Do not run a self-extracting executable simply because it is presented as an archive. If a legitimate ZIP will not open, check with the sender or your IT support rather than disabling protections or running an unfamiliar program.
- Inspect the extracted file list before opening anything. Compare names, extensions, and folder structure with what the sender or publisher said to expect. Be wary if a promised document, image, or video arrives as a program, script, shortcut, or installer. Extensions can mislead, so stop and ask the trusted sender or IT support if the contents do not make sense.
- Open only the expected item. Keep your operating system and apps updated. Do not enable macros or bypass a system warning as a routine step. If the archive is unexpected, malformed, requests an unusual password, or contains unexpected executable material, stop and delete it or report it to your organization’s IT or security team.
Is a password-protected ZIP safe?
No. A password does not establish that an archive is safe. CISA warns that malware is often compressed in password-protected archives that evade antivirus scanning and email filters (CISA StopRansomware Guide). Microsoft also explains that Defender for Office 365 Safe Attachments cannot fully scan or detonate a password-protected attachment unless the password is available (Microsoft Learn: Safe Attachments in Microsoft Defender for Office 365).

Only enter an archive password when you expected the file and the sender and business context are independently credible. Never enter an account, banking, or unrelated password to unlock an archive. Safe Attachments is an additional protection for eligible Microsoft 365 configurations; behavior depends on plan and policy, and it is not a guarantee for consumer email.
What Windows and Mac warnings do—and do not—tell you
Windows
Attachment Manager uses information about where a downloaded file came from and can warn or block. Microsoft’s guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 is to verify the source, scan the file, confirm its type matches expectations, and avoid unexpected attachments. Do not disable SmartScreen or antivirus to extract a file.

macOS
Apple’s Gatekeeper checks software downloaded from the internet, including developer identity and signatures; by default, apps on macOS Catalina and later also undergo notarization checks. These protections concern running apps. They do not establish that every arbitrary file inside a ZIP has been inspected or is harmless (Apple: Open apps safely on your Mac). A Gatekeeper override is not a way to scan an archive.

Do not bypass the warning just to extract or open the file. Verify the archive with the sender through a separate trusted channel, or contact your organization’s IT or security team. If you cannot establish that the source is trusted and the contents are expected, stop and delete or report the file. A warning’s absence is not proof of safety, either.
