Instagram and Snapchat use teen-approved supervision invitations; YouTube has separate supervised-account options for children and teens. TikTok also has a Family Pairing feature, but verified current setup instructions and control details are not available here, so this guide does not guess at its menus.
Before starting, make sure your teen is involved: Instagram and Snapchat require the teen to accept supervision, and YouTube’s teen flow links the parent’s and teen’s accounts.
How the four platforms’ controls differ
| Platform | How supervision is set up | What the controls cover | Age or availability notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parent and teen accounts are linked by an invitation the teen accepts. | Account-activity visibility and time-management tools. | Teen 13–17; parent over 18. Each teen account must be supervised separately. | |
| TikTok | Family Pairing is the relevant feature, but current setup details are not established here. | Current controls are not established here. | Eligibility and regional availability are not established here. |
| Snapchat | A parent invites a teen who is their Snapchat friend; the teen accepts. | Some friend, chat-contact, time and feature-use visibility; content controls, reporting and optional location sharing. Private conversation content is not shown. | Parent or caregiver 18 or older; teen 13–17. Availability varies during rollout. |
| YouTube | Children use a supervised child Google account; teens link their accounts with a parent through Family Center. | Child accounts have content and history controls. Teen supervision links accounts; the two flows are distinct. | Child-account audience is under 13 or the applicable age in the country or region. The teen setup is a separate option. |
How to set parental controls on Instagram
Instagram supervision is an agreed relationship between a teen’s account and a parent’s account. Meta’s February 2026 announcement describes a consolidated Family Center for supervised accounts across Instagram and other Meta services, and says the rollout is global. The current setup route is Meta Family Center supervision; older instructions that point only to Instagram settings may not reflect this consolidated route.
Who can use Instagram supervision
- The teen must be 13–17 and the parent must be over 18.
- Both need Instagram accounts.
- The teen must accept a parent-initiated invitation. If the teen initiates, they must confirm that the accepting parent is the right person.
- If the teen has more than one Instagram account, supervision must be enabled or accepted separately for each account to be supervised.
What parents can manage or see
Meta describes Instagram supervision as providing account-activity visibility and time-management tools. The available setup information does not specify every control or the exact mobile-screen labels, so use the current Family Center flow rather than relying on guessed tap-by-tap directions.

How to set parental controls on TikTok
TikTok calls its parent-and-teen supervision feature Family Pairing. Current TikTok-owned instructions for its setup, eligibility, controls and regional availability are not established here. Because those details can change, do not rely on guessed menu paths or older third-party directions. Check TikTok’s current in-app Family Pairing information or its official Support guidance before linking accounts.

What Snapchat Family Center shows and controls
Family Center can show a teen’s friends and who they chat with, average time spent and use by feature. It also provides content controls, reporting tools and optional family location sharing. It does not show the content of private conversations. Snapchat says the feature is for caregivers aged 18 or older and teens aged 13–17; it may not be available in every location while rollout continues.

YouTube offers different routes for a supervised child account and a supervised teen account. YouTube Kids is another distinct option; it is not the same thing as a supervised YouTube account. Choose the flow that matches the child’s age and account rather than assuming Family Center creates every type of account.

Set up a supervised account for a child
YouTube’s child-account flow is for children under 13 or the relevant age in their country or region. A parent can begin in any of these documented ways:
- In the YouTube app on the parent’s device.
- With the linked child Google Account on the child’s device.
- At families.youtube.com.
- Through Family Link.
During setup, select a content setting. Family Center can manage existing supervised accounts, but it is not the only account-creation route.

Manage a supervised child account
Use the linked account’s Family Center or Family Link. YouTube documents these controls:
- Choose a content level and block specific channels.
- Review or clear watch history.
- Pause watch and search history.
- Disable autoplay.
Set up supervision for a teen
The parent and teen link their accounts through Family Center. Either one can initiate the invitation, and either the parent or the teen can turn supervision off. YouTube’s guidance puts the choice plainly: “It’s up to each family to decide if and how they want to use supervision on YouTube.”
Quick Recap
What to check before relying on a platform’s controls
- Confirm the right account is linked. Supervision applies to the linked account; on Instagram, each account a teen wants supervised needs its own setup.
- Review the actual controls together. Visibility and settings vary by platform, and supervision does not necessarily give a parent access to private messages.
- Check availability and age rules. Country or regional age thresholds and gradual feature rollouts can affect whether a flow appears.
- Revisit settings when the app changes. Platform labels, controls and availability can change; use the current in-app or official support instructions for the service you are configuring.
