A new Windows laptop can feel slow because of updates, startup apps, background processes, low storage, malware, or a software conflict—not necessarily because its hardware is defective. Work through the checks below in order, starting with updates and Task Manager; if the slowdown persists, collect a few details and contact the seller or manufacturer before attempting a reset.
1. Pin down what feels slow
Describe the symptom before changing settings. Is Windows slow to start, do apps take a long time to open, does the whole system lag, or does the problem happen only in a browser or one particular app? Note any heat, fan noise, or intermittent freezing, and whether the issue began during initial setup or after an app, update, or peripheral was added.
This distinction helps narrow the next check. For example, slow startup points toward startup apps, while lag that occurs only in one app may be app-specific. Microsoft lists limited storage, startup and background activity, outdated software, malware, resource-heavy processes, and hardware limits among possible causes; the laptop’s age alone does not identify which one applies. 2. Install Windows updates and restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- Restart the laptop if Windows asks you to, then see whether the symptom has changed.
Updates can include fixes and performance improvements. If the problem remains, you can review Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for a driver that appears relevant to the device and symptom. Optional drivers are noncritical; do not install one simply because it is listed if it does not match the problem.

3. Check resource use and startup apps in Task Manager
Look for a process keeping the laptop busy
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. In Processes, look at the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns; use Performance for a broader view. If one app or process remains busy while you are not doing much, note its name and the resource it is using. A momentary spike—such as while an app opens or Windows finishes setup—is not by itself proof of a fault.
Reduce unnecessary startup activity
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and review what launches when you sign in. Startup applications can affect startup time and overall performance. Disable only items you recognize and do not need at startup; leave unfamiliar entries enabled until you know what they do. 4. Check available storage before cleaning anything
Open File Explorer and select This PC to check free space, or go to Settings > System > Storage. If the drive is low on space, review Windows’ suggested cleanup options, including Storage Sense and temporary files. Check what will be removed before confirming, and review installed apps before uninstalling any.
Low storage can slow performance and cause trouble installing Windows updates, but it should not be assumed to be the cause without checking. See Microsoft’s guidance on freeing up drive space.

5. Run Windows Security checks
Scan for malware
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a quick scan. Malware can consume CPU or disk resources, but a scan is a check—not proof that malware caused the slowdown. Follow Windows Security’s recommendations if it finds a threat.
Review the device health report
In Windows Security, open Device performance & health and review any flagged storage, battery, software, or system issue. Treat a flag as a clue and follow its specific recommendation; the report does not, on its own, establish that a particular hardware component is defective. 6. Consider a clean boot only if simpler checks do not help
If the slowdown continues and you suspect a startup or background software conflict, a clean boot can help isolate nonessential services and startup programs. It involves changing advanced settings in System Configuration and can temporarily reduce functionality. Keep track of any items you disable so you can restore normal startup afterward.
Because incorrect System Configuration changes can make a computer unusable, do not attempt this procedure if you are unsure how to reverse the changes. Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions or ask the manufacturer for help.

7. Contact the seller or manufacturer if the problem persists
If the laptop remains slow after these checks, avoid repeated speculative tuning or buying parts before the cause is known. Have the following information ready when you contact the retailer or manufacturer:
- The exact laptop model and Windows version.
- What feels slow, when it began, and whether it happens consistently or only in a particular app.
- Any app or device added shortly before the problem started.
- What you observed in Task Manager, including whether CPU, memory, or disk use stayed high while the laptop was idle.
- Which checks you tried and whether any error or health warning appeared.
The appropriate remedy depends on the device and the cause; the available guidance does not establish a particular warranty, return period, or defective part. Before using Reset, reinstalling Windows, or choosing another recovery option that could affect files, back up important data and start with the least disruptive option that fits the situation.
