Your brand can be absent because a page is hard to discover, another source better supports the answer, the response is worded without naming your business, or the product provides no source links for that response. These are possible explanations, not a diagnosis of any one omission. Being crawlable or indexed makes content potentially available; it does not guarantee retrieval, a brand mention, or a visible citation.

Why doesn’t ChatGPT mention my business?

First check that you mean ChatGPT Search, rather than a response that did not use web search. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT Search and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot if you want pages to be eligible for inclusion in search summaries and snippets. Search results are ranked using multiple factors intended to surface relevant and reliable information, and OpenAI does not guarantee placement. Crawl access is an eligibility and discovery step, not a promise of a mention. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for search discovery, from GPTBot, associated with model training; blocking GPTBot is not a documented way to control ChatGPT Search inclusion.

Even when ChatGPT Search uses web results, a response may synthesize information without naming every relevant business. OpenAI also cautions that results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. A missing citation therefore does not establish that a site was blocked or never considered. Check the specific prompt, response, date, and visible citations before drawing conclusions. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search help explains how search results and citations appear.

How do I get my brand cited by Perplexity?

There is no documented formula that guarantees a Perplexity mention. Its publisher-program announcement describes answers as including citations since launch, as well as a partnership program involving planned revenue sharing when referenced content appears in monetized interactions and analytics collaboration for partners. The announcement does not publish a complete ranking recipe or promise that a particular brand will be cited or earn revenue. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said, “We structured this program to ensure we have a scalable and sustainable way to align incentives for all parties.” That statement describes the program’s aim, not a guarantee for all publishers. For practical improvements, make important public pages accessible to crawlers and clear about what your business offers, where it operates, and which questions its products or services answer. Publish original, useful information that supports those claims. These steps can improve discoverability and make facts easier to understand; the cited announcement does not say they secure a citation.

How can I tell whether my site appears in Google AI Overviews?

Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode are Search features, not the same surface as Gemini Apps. Google says its generative AI Search features draw on core Search ranking and quality systems and use the Search index to find relevant, up-to-date pages. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, but eligibility is not a serving guarantee: “Just because a page meets all requirements, best practices, and complies with the policies, doesn’t mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content.” Google’s generative AI Search guide also describes query fan-out, in which related queries may help gather information for a user’s question. It does not promise that a page or brand will appear.

To check what Google makes measurable, use Search Console’s Generative AI performance report. Google says it reports impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode and supports views by page, device, and country. The report’s worldwide rollout was stated as complete on August 31, 2026; an individual property may still lack access if it has insufficient impressions or is excluded from those features. An impression is not a full transcript of every answer and cannot explain why a brand was omitted. Google’s Search Console report help describes its scope and availability.

Why does Gemini answer without sources?

Gemini Apps has its own source-display behavior. Google says a response sometimes includes sources and related links, which may include public websites, but not all responses have sources. If the Sources button is absent, Gemini did not provide links for that response. That absence alone does not prove that your website was blocked or never considered. Do not treat the Gemini Apps interface as interchangeable with Google AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google’s Gemini Apps help explains how to view related sources on a computer.

What can you change—and what can you measure?

Fix the foundations

  • Allow the relevant search crawler if you want the platform to discover your public pages, and check that important pages can be reached without sign-in or technical errors.
  • Make sure pages intended for search are indexable and eligible to appear in ordinary search results.
  • Use clear, accurate language about your business, products, services, locations, and evidence. Answer the questions your actual customers ask with useful, original material.

Skip supposed shortcuts

Google’s recommendations for its Search generative features are to follow established SEO practices and create unique, helpful, people-first content. It says site owners can ignore tactics such as content “chunking,” unnecessary AI text files such as llms.txt, and inauthentic mentions as ranking tactics for Google Search. That is Google-specific guidance, not a published ranking formula for ChatGPT or Perplexity. No source cited here establishes that schema markup, a particular article template, or a volume of mentions will guarantee inclusion on any of these services.

Use the available signals carefully

OpenAI says publishers who allow OAI-SearchBot can track ChatGPT referral traffic in analytics; referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. This can help identify visits attributed to ChatGPT Search, but it will not count every mention or reveal every time a user saw an answer. Google Search Console reports the AI Search impressions described above, subject to its eligibility and availability conditions. Neither metric alone explains an omission, and the reviewed platform guidance provides no universal source-selection formula or cross-platform omission rate.

When investigating a specific case, record the exact prompt, product surface, date, and location; inspect whether the response shows sources; and check whether your relevant pages are publicly accessible and eligible for search. Compare what the answer claims with the sources it actually displays. One missing mention is a response-specific observation, not proof of a sitewide penalty or a permanent exclusion.
