If you want a computer to secure itself when you walk away, Windows 11 Presence Sensing is the main non-Bluetooth option—provided your PC has compatible hardware. Windows Dynamic Lock and third-party Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) utilities can also lock a Windows session when a paired device moves out of range, but they are fallbacks, not guarantees. Keep ordinary idle auto-lock enabled whichever option you use.
Which automatic-lock alternative should you choose?
The right choice depends on your operating system, available sensors and whether the feature actually locks the device when you leave. These options are not interchangeable: some react to presence, some to Bluetooth signal strength, and Apple’s documented automatic-unlock flows do not provide general leave-to-lock behavior.

When comparing options, check the operating system and hardware requirements, whether the trigger locks or merely unlocks, how delays and thresholds are configured, and what happens if Bluetooth or a sensor is unavailable. The cited documentation does not establish comparative lock speed or false-lock rates.
Use Windows 11 Presence Sensing if your PC supports it
Presence Sensing is the main non-Bluetooth alternative covered here. Microsoft documents settings for turning off the screen when you leave and waking the device when you approach. Availability varies by region, and some capabilities require specific hardware, so a Windows 11 PC may not show every option. See Microsoft’s Presence Sensing settings guide.

- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep.
- Look for Automatically turn off my screen when I leave. Enable it if available and appropriate for your use.
- If you want the device to wake as you return, check for Automatically wake up my device when I approach and configure it if available.
- Test the behavior in your usual workspace. Do not assume the setting is present or supported just because the PC runs Windows 11.
Microsoft describes the setting as screen behavior. Check your device’s available controls and test whether the resulting behavior meets your security needs; do not assume that turning off the screen is equivalent to locking the session.
Understand Windows Dynamic Lock’s limits
Dynamic Lock is available for Windows 10 and Windows 11 and uses a paired phone’s Bluetooth signal. Microsoft states that it “only locks the device if the Bluetooth signal falls and the system is idle.” In practice, it is not an instant lock triggered solely by walking away: if the PC remains active, the lock may not occur. Microsoft calls Dynamic Lock an additional barrier, not a replacement for locking the computer. Read the Microsoft Learn Dynamic Lock documentation.

Dynamic Lock’s policy documentation gives default values of rssiMin="-10" and rssiMaxDelta="-10". These are Bluetooth signal policy values, not a universal distance in metres or feet. Microsoft says readings depend on environmental conditions, recommends keeping the defaults, and advises testing policy values in each environment before broad deployment.
Use Dynamic Lock as a convenience layer if you carry a paired phone, but leave a normal idle lock in place. Do not rely on a particular Bluetooth range as a security boundary.

Consider a third-party BLE utility only if you can evaluate it
SignalLock is an example of a Windows utility that scans BLE advertisements, smooths received signal-strength readings, applies a configurable away delay and calls the Windows workstation-lock API. Its project documentation lists Windows 10 version 1809 or newer, Windows 11 support and BLE-capable hardware. Those are the project’s stated requirements and features, not independently validated test results. See the SignalLock project repository.
- Check hardware first: the PC needs BLE-capable hardware that works with the utility.
- Test the device you plan to track: the project says stock iPhones rotate BLE advertising addresses, which can make reliable tracking difficult.
- Allow for setup and tuning: signal readings and away delays need testing in your own environment; do not treat a configured threshold as a fixed physical distance.
- Assess installation warnings: the project notes that its executable is unsigned and may trigger a Windows SmartScreen warning. That is a reason to make your own trust and security assessment, not to bypass warnings automatically.
A USB BLE adapter may help only if the PC lacks suitable built-in hardware and the adapter is compatible with the chosen operating system and utility. No particular adapter model or compatibility has been established here.

Keep idle auto-lock as the dependable baseline
Proximity features can be delayed, unavailable or unable to detect the condition you expect. A conventional idle timeout addresses a different case: it locks after a period without activity, whether or not your phone or another trusted device is nearby. Set a timeout that fits your security needs and confirm that it is enabled.
NIST’s Mobile Threat Catalogue identifies unattended, unlocked devices as a security and privacy risk and lists maximum-idle-time auto-lock and proximity-loss locking among countermeasures. That guidance supports using idle locking alongside proximity behavior; it does not establish a measured reduction in breaches or the effectiveness of any specific product. Do not mistake automatic unlock for automatic locking
Apple documents automatic unlocking between certain supported Apple devices, including an Apple Watch unlocking a Mac. Its documented Mac-and-Apple-Watch flow requires the devices to use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, the relationship to be enabled and the watch to be unlocked and nearby—about 2–3 metres or less. - If you need a non-Bluetooth leave-detection option, check whether your Windows 11 PC supports Presence Sensing and verify the behavior it provides.
- If you carry a paired phone and want a built-in Windows feature, Dynamic Lock can add a Bluetooth-triggered lock when the PC is idle.
- If you need more configurable BLE behavior, evaluate a utility such as SignalLock against your hardware and phone, then test it in your environment.
- Whatever you choose, retain ordinary idle auto-lock and lock the device manually when you need immediate protection.
