During the age of dinosaurs, parts of Antarctica—especially the Antarctic Peninsula—supported forests of ferns, conifers, mosses and other plants. The continent was not the permanently ice-covered landscape seen today. But it was still near the South Pole: long winter darkness and dramatic seasonal shifts in daylight accompanied its relatively mild, temperate conditions.
That picture comes from fossils, not a complete view of the continent. Antarctica changed over the many millions of years dinosaurs lived, and the best-known evidence comes from particular places and periods.
What did the Antarctic landscape look like?
Plant fossils from Antarctic Peninsula rocks—wood, pollen, spores and leaves—show that forests grew there. Evidence includes ferns and pines, as well as mosses, ginkgoes and cycads related to plants found in the Southern Hemisphere today. Flowering plants appear later in the fossil record, around 100 million years ago; southern beech is among those recorded.
The British Antarctic Survey describes the Late Mesozoic climate as relatively warm and temperate. That does not mean Antarctica had a uniform climate or resembled a modern tropical forest. The evidence supports a forested setting in the fossil-bearing regions, not the same vegetation everywhere across the continent.

The ideal present for birthdays, holidays, or rewards that will amaze kids and impress parents. It encourages screen-free play, rewarding children with knowledge and a great sense of accomplishment.
Antarctica also remained a polar place. The Antarctic Peninsula was at roughly 70° south in the Late Mesozoic, where seasonal daylight varies enormously. The Natural History Museum describes winter twilight conditions. Forests and long winter darkness therefore belong in the same reconstruction.
Was Antarctica covered in ice when dinosaurs lived there?
Not in the way it is today. Fossil-bearing Antarctic Peninsula rocks preserve evidence of forests and a relatively mild Late Mesozoic climate, rather than the modern ice-covered landscape. This evidence describes specific places and intervals; it does not establish that every part of Antarctica was ice-free throughout the entire age of dinosaurs.

Did dinosaurs live in Antarctica?
Yes. Dinosaur remains are known from the northern Antarctic Peninsula, although relatively few have been formally described. A notable addition to that record was reported by the Natural History Museum on 29 June 2026: a vertebra collected on James Ross Island during a British Antarctic Survey expedition in 1985 was identified as a sauropod bone.
The vertebra came from marine rocks alongside ammonites. Those fossils date the layer to the lower Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous. The bone’s shape and size suggest Titanosauria, a group of sauropods, but it is too incomplete to identify the species. An estimated length of six to seven metres is tentative and could describe an immature animal, not the adult size of a known species.

- Quality Educational Toys: VIBIRIT's Dinosaur Science Kit allows kids to take on the role of little archaeologists and learn about dinosaurs as well as prehistoric creatures while having fun by simulating the process of an archaeological dig.The detailed and realistic dinosaur skeleton model can also satisfy children's curiosity and stimulate their imagination and creative thinking as well as their interest in science
- Cultivate hands-on skills: Our dinosaur toys require children to carefully excavate the models using tools such as small hammers and brushes. The dinosaur bones that are dug up need to be cleaned and assembled. This process not only helps in improving children's hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills but also enhances their memory and boosts their self-confidence
- Quality Materials: Dinosaur fossil digging kit for kids are made of durable vinyl and sheetrock, enough to keep your child occupied for hours, prepare before you start by wetting the sheetrock with water ahead of time to make digging easier
- Promote Parent-Child Interaction: Parents and children participating in this activity not only enjoy a rare bonding time, but also allow parents to better guide and support their children's spirit of exploration
The museum calls it the first dinosaur bone discovered on Antarctica and the second sauropod bone reported from the continent. The fossil does not show that sauropods were common there. Its marine setting suggests the bone reached the sea after the animal died, perhaps carried by a river, but that route is an interpretation rather than an observed event. The dinosaur may also have floated or been washed out to sea before burial.
Where did Antarctica sit in the dinosaur world?
Antarctica was part of Gondwana, the southern supercontinent. As Gondwana broke apart, the arrangements among Antarctica, South America and other southern landmasses changed. The Australian Antarctic Program says the breakup began around 130 million years ago and that links between Australia and Antarctica lasted until about 55 million years ago.

- Assemble a 26-inch-long, scientifically accurate scale model of a T. Rex skeleton!
- Learn about the anatomy of the T. Rex and lots of cool facts about dinosaurs, fossils, and life during the cretaceous period.
- Plastic pieces snap together easily and the included base allows for easy display of your built skeleton.
- Includes an 8-page, full-color descriptive manual.
The Antarctic Peninsula’s position may have enabled animals to disperse among southern landmasses. Specific migration routes remain hypotheses, however; the fossils do not establish a single route for every species or period.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How certain is any reconstruction?
A scene of the Antarctic Peninsula in the Late Cretaceous can reasonably show a forested landscape with ferns and conifers, other fossil-supported plants, and dinosaurs in a high-latitude setting with pronounced seasonal darkness. It should be labeled as a reconstruction of a particular region and time—not a snapshot of all Antarctica throughout the dinosaur era.

- Well supported: Antarctic Peninsula fossils document diverse plants and dinosaurs, and the plant communities support a relatively warm, temperate Late Mesozoic climate.
- Limited: Fossil exposures are sparse, and many animal remains are fragmentary. The 2026 sauropod vertebra cannot reveal the animal’s exact species.
- Not established by the evidence cited here: a precise average temperature for dinosaur-bearing sites, the abundance of particular dinosaur species, or one exact continent-wide landscape.
The British Antarctic Survey says its fossil collection contains around 40,000 specimens; that is the size of the collection, not a count of dinosaur fossils.
