To fix popping or crackling sounds from iPhone speakers, start with reversible checks: turn off Silent mode and Do Not Disturb, remove anything covering the openings, inspect them, and test the alert slider. If crackling happens only during calls, reception may be the cause. If the problem persists—or began after liquid exposure—follow Apple’s safety guidance and seek service when needed.
1. Check Silent mode, Focus, and anything covering the openings
- Turn off Silent mode. Depending on your iPhone, use the Ring/Silent switch, Action button, or the Silent mode control in Control Centre.
- Turn off Do Not Disturb. Open Settings and check Focus to make sure Do Not Disturb is off.
- Remove the case, film, or screen protector temporarily. These can obstruct an opening or affect sound, so test the iPhone without them.
- Inspect the speaker and receiver openings. Look for visible dirt or blockage. If cleaning is needed, Apple advises using a clean, dry, small, soft-bristled brush. Do not insert objects or use liquid cleaners or compressed air.
These checks address possible obstructions; they do not establish that a particular part is damaged. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance does not identify one universal cause of crackling. Apple’s iPhone distorted-sound troubleshooting steps cover settings, obstructions, call conditions, and service.
2. Test the alert sound, then compare it with a call
Use the Ringtone and Alerts slider
Open Settings → Sounds or Sounds & Haptics, then move the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth. Listen for crackling or distortion. Apple says service may be needed if there is no sound or the speaker button on the slider is dimmed.
Try speakerphone
If the alert test sounds normal, make a call and turn on speakerphone. If crackling occurs during calls but not during the alert test or other audio, network or reception conditions could be involved. Try again later or from another location before treating it as a speaker fault.

3. If the iPhone got wet, let it dry naturally
Water in a speaker or microphone opening may temporarily degrade performance until it evaporates. Apple suggests placing the phone speaker-side down on a lint-free cloth to see whether water drips out. You can gently tap the phone against your hand with the Lightning or USB-C connector facing down, then leave it in a dry area with airflow. Cool air from a fan directed at the connector may help.
- Unplug any cable and do not charge or connect accessories until the iPhone is completely dry.
- Apple’s guidance says to wait at least five hours before wired charging or connecting an accessory after liquid exposure.
- Do not use an external heat source or insert an object into the connector.
Apple notes that water in a port can affect speaker or microphone performance until it evaporates, and that splash, water, and dust resistance can decrease with normal wear. A resistance rating is not a guarantee against liquid damage; Apple says liquid damage is not covered by its warranty, though consumer-law rights may apply. 4. When to arrange service
Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the sound remains distorted after the checks above, the alert slider produces no sound, or its speaker button is dimmed. Apple’s troubleshooting page says that a device with continuing sound issues may need service. Confirm service options and any coverage or eligibility directly with Apple; do not assume a particular repair is covered.
There is no prevalence figure in Apple’s cited guidance showing how common this symptom is, and it does not establish a model-wide defect or say that a software update fixes crackling. The checks above help distinguish possible obstruction, call reception, liquid exposure, and an issue that needs service without guessing at a diagnosis.
