Pair the phone over Bluetooth, then enable Dynamic Lock in Windows sign-in settings. It locks only when the computer is idle and the phone’s Bluetooth signal drops below a variable threshold. Android’s similarly named Extend Unlock does something different: it can keep the phone unlocked near a trusted Bluetooth device. Apple’s documented Mac controls do not include an iPhone-triggered Bluetooth-away lock.
Set up Bluetooth proximity locking on Windows 10 or 11
Windows Dynamic Lock monitors the Bluetooth signal from a paired phone. When that signal falls below a threshold, Windows can lock the computer—but only if the PC is idle at that point. Microsoft describes Dynamic Lock as an extra layer of protection, not a replacement for manually locking your computer (Microsoft Learn: Dynamic lock).
Before you start
- Bluetooth must be available on both the Windows computer and the phone.
- If your computer does not have Bluetooth, a compatible Bluetooth USB adapter may be an option; check compatibility with your Windows version. A computer with built-in Bluetooth does not need an adapter.
- You do not need Phone Link as a substitute for pairing or as a Dynamic Lock setup step; it is a separate feature (Microsoft Support: Phone Link requirements and setup).
Pair your phone and turn on Dynamic Lock
- On the Windows computer, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and make sure Bluetooth is on. On the phone, turn on Bluetooth.
- In Windows Bluetooth settings, choose the option to add a device, select Bluetooth, and choose your phone when it appears. Confirm any pairing code or prompt on both devices.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Find Dynamic Lock and turn on the option that allows Windows to lock automatically when you are away. The exact wording can vary by Windows release.
- Test it in your normal workspace. Walk away with the paired phone and check that Windows locks; then return and confirm that your usual sign-in method is required.
Do not rely on a precise distance or countdown. Microsoft says the signal threshold is relative and can vary with the environment; its administrator documentation describes default RSSI policy values of rssiMin="-10" and rssiMaxDelta="-10", not a universal range or delay (Microsoft Learn: Dynamic lock). Group Policy and Intune can configure policy for managed devices, but most users should use the Windows Settings control.
What Dynamic Lock will and will not do
- If the signal threshold is crossed while you are actively using the PC, Dynamic Lock will not lock it at that moment; the computer must be idle.
- If someone begins using the computer before the signal threshold is crossed, it will not lock.
- Because signal behavior varies, test the feature in your own workspace and manually lock the PC whenever you leave sensitive information exposed. Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “It doesn’t replace the need for the user to lock the computer.”
Can Android keep your phone unlocked near a Bluetooth device?
Yes, on supported Android devices, Google’s Extend Unlock can keep the phone unlocked while a trusted Bluetooth device is connected. It does not make a computer lock when the phone leaves; its direction is the reverse of Windows Dynamic Lock (Google Android Help: Choose when your Android phone can stay unlocked).

- Turn on Bluetooth and pair the Android phone with the device you want to trust.
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > More security & privacy > Extend Unlock > Trusted devices.
- Select the paired device, then unlock the phone to confirm.
Menu names may differ by Android version and manufacturer. Google advises trusting only appropriate Bluetooth devices and avoiding devices that tend to remain with the phone, such as a Bluetooth keyboard or case.
Can an iPhone lock a Mac when you walk away?
Apple’s documented Mac settings do not describe an iPhone-triggered Bluetooth-away lock. The native Lock Screen control is based on idle time: open Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen and choose when a password is required after the screen saver starts or the display turns off (Apple Support: Change Lock Screen settings on Mac).

Apple Watch Auto Unlock is the opposite direction
Apple Watch Auto Unlock can unlock an eligible Mac when the watch is nearby; it is not an iPhone-away locking feature. Apple requires Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, and a passcode on the watch. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, enable the watch in System Settings > Touch ID & Password or Login Password, depending on the Mac (Apple Support: Unlock your Mac with Apple Watch). Apple’s security guide describes supported automatic-unlock relationships and their Bluetooth Low Energy basis, but does not document a built-in iPhone proximity lock for Mac (Apple Platform Security: Automatically unlock Apple devices).
Third-party Mac proximity-lock apps are separate software, not an Apple setting. Their security and current availability need to be evaluated individually.
