If Gemini isn’t showing in Google Maps, first start an active route in the Maps app: Google’s instructions put the Gemini control in navigation, not on the ordinary map screen. If it is still missing, check platform and feature availability for your country, language, account and device. A missing button does not by itself mean your phone is broken.
Make sure you’re looking in the right place
Google calls the feature “Gemini in Google Maps” or “Gemini while you navigate.” Open Google Maps, choose a destination and start navigation. Then look for the Gemini icon or try saying “Hey Google.” Google’s instructions cover both Android and iPhone/iPad. Google Maps Help
The Gemini mobile app is a separate experience: it can use public Google Maps information to find places and directions, but that is not the same as a Gemini control on the Maps navigation screen. Check that you’re troubleshooting the Maps app itself, not expecting the standalone Gemini app to add a button to Maps. Gemini Apps Help
Check your platform and navigation context

If the icon is missing, check availability
Google’s driving announcement of November 5, 2025, said Gemini navigation would roll out on Android and iOS wherever Gemini is available. Its January 29, 2026, announcement extended the navigation experience to walking and cycling, also rolling out on iOS and Android wherever Gemini is available. Check Google’s current Gemini mobile app availability page for your country, language, account and device. It lists Android 9 or later with at least 2 GB of RAM, and iOS 16 or later, among the mobile app requirements. Those are Gemini app requirements; they do not establish a particular phone brand or model as necessary for Gemini in Maps. Supported countries, languages and account access can change, so consult the live page for your situation.
If your setup appears eligible but the control is absent, staged rollout may explain the difference. A Google Maps Help Community product expert said on December 12, 2025, that staged releases can take several months to reach eligible users with the latest version. That is a general explanation, not a promised wait time or an account-specific activation date. Google Maps Help Community response

Separate voice problems from a missing button
If the Gemini icon is visible but “Hey Google” does not activate it on Android, check the Hey Google and Voice Match settings. Google’s Maps Help identifies these as voice-activation checks. They address voice access; Google does not say changing them will make an absent on-screen icon appear. Google Maps Help
Review Android permissions only when relevant
When Gemini is used as the Android device assistant, it is hosted by the Google app. To review that app’s permissions, open the Google app’s App info and choose Permissions. On most Android phones, you can reach App info by long-pressing the Google app icon and tapping the info button. Review permissions relevant to the task you want; location access can matter for location-dependent answers, but Google does not describe granting it as a universal fix for a missing Maps control. Update the apps, then retry
- Check the app store on your device for updates to Google Maps and, where applicable, the Gemini app.
- Open Google Maps, choose a destination and start turn-by-turn navigation.
- Look for the Gemini icon. If it is there, test tapping it; test “Hey Google” separately.
- If the icon remains absent, verify your platform and Gemini availability against Google’s current country, language, account and device information.
Google’s navigation help does not specify an exact minimum Google Maps app version as the reason a missing control appears. Updating is a sensible troubleshooting check, but it is not evidence that an update alone will resolve the issue.
When none of those checks explains it
If you are using the Maps app during active navigation, your setup meets Google’s stated availability conditions and the control is still absent, the feature may not have reached your account yet. Use Google Maps’ in-app help or feedback route to report the issue. Google has not published a reliable per-account activation date.

What Gemini in Maps can do once it appears
During navigation, Google documents using Gemini to ask questions about the route, control navigation, find places along the way and report road issues. Calling, texting or using connected apps may also be available where supported. These are navigation features and should not be confused with asking the separate Gemini app for place information.
